I would like to install a security camera at my barn that looks up a long straight section of my driveway to see who is approaching. I already have a Dakota driveway alarm at the entrance but since the driveway is 2,000' it takes a while before I can see who it is. Details:

- barn is 750 feet from the house, not a totally clear line of sight, some trees are in the way
- I have power at the barn
- trenching a wire or cable from the barn to the house is not happening
- my only Internet is a 4G hotspot (data limits), distance is too far for WiFi
- I do not want to set up a cellular connection

Any thoughts on this? Seems like wireless security camera have short range (100' max) limits.

Wifi and extender. Local net work set up, not use the internet to relay. One possible idea. The range is a issue thus the extender

I should have mentioned that I have no power along the 750' distance between the house and barn so a WiFi extender between the 2 would be tough I guess. Although I may one day I may run some power for lighting that would allow for an WiFi extender along the way. I like the local network idea.

You can setup a wireless bridge over that distance as long as there's power at both ends it's not too complicated. Not having line of sight makes the difficulty go up a bit. Can you add a pole above the house and barn to get a clear shot?

Using a mast not ideal but it is a possibility. Definitely on the barn, maybe on the house.

Would this be using something that Ubiquiti makes?

Yes, something like Jet.com - Prices Drop As You Shop[*Campaign*]&ds_cid=[*CampagnID*]&ds_ag=[*Adgroup*]&product_id=7f21cca184034ecba46d8c725c374cdd&product_partition_id=161688660300&gclid=CjwKEAiAvs7CBRC24rao6bGCoiASJABaCt5DrbBalLZKVdPYp7_RWAR3ZN86mTO9f0hBiY3o9MCNCxoCvxzw_wcB

750' is not a problem. 750' and trees just might be a problem. Do some testing before you lay out big bucks.

...750' and trees just might be a problem....
Some of the obstruction is brush, some smaller trees (less than 6" in diameter) and a few big trees. I can whack the smaller stuff, are a few big trees a problem?

The higher frequency wireless bridges (2.5ghz & 5.4ghz) don't like to have trees in the way, especially wet leaves. There are some lower frequency (900 mhz) bridges available that will go through most trees.

Yep. Stick with 900MHz and you should be fine. Don't even think about 5.4 gig stuff.

Elevation above the vegetation will help, too.

Long range wi fi of many miles is possible. Read this below to get some ideas. Of course a chain saw could be helpful. :)

use 2.4 ubiquiti nano beams and you should be set

We used to run a 17 mile link across state lines to avoid tariffs. It helped that we had free access half way up a 1500 foot tower on one end.

How about 237 miles? It is all about antenna gain and path loss and good equipment.

Quote from that article.....

"And yes, I now feel a whole new kind of stupid for not being able to get a reasonable signal between home office and bedroom."

Use power line ethernet with wifi on the barn end for the camera

Google power line Ethernet for more options
I don't know if hardwired cameras are cheaper. Then you could use just power line bridge without wifi and plug the camera directly to the bridge.
They are unlikely to work over that distance. I found them to be less than perfect at less than a fifth of the distance he's talking about. Given the distance I doubt the house and barn are on the same transformer.

Not all are created equal. I would research it. There might be some that would do it. My solar panels communicate over power line with the monitor over 1100 ft away.
Other option would be something similar what the drones use for cameras. Friend of mine has a drone that send video over 1000 ft away.

I've now tried two different brands of powerline ethernet adaptors to get about 150' from my pump house (where I'd like to mount a couple IP cameras) to the router in my office where the satellite Internet feed comes into the house. Neither the TP-Link nor the Netgear hardware would deliver a full speed signal, and with video you need all the speed you can get. I'm giving up and will dig a trench for CAT6 cable.

I'd really like to be able to put a camera up at the gate, too, but it's a quarter mile away over a hill and not near any power. A trench that long is not very likely any time soon, so I'm in the same boat as the OP.
