'' It just has to be accessible when needed. ""

And when will that be??? Perhaps you have the ability to see into the future but I surely do not.

Richard, These are only my opinions, you have to make the choice yourself. Carrying Concealed can be a real pain at times. Here in Michigan you have to be aware of many things. these can all be learned at packing.org, as well as laws for all states.
As far as personal defense, I very much prefer my Sig 239 black stainless in 40 cal S&W. I like the speed available of first shot capability. With a fair amount of practice you can get very good. Shotguns for myself and my environment seem sort of so-so. One thing tho, forget the macho BS of the sound of a pumpgun racking in a round. Think of it this way, your in your house, does the bad guy know where you might be? The answer is probably no. So then, why would you want to blow your conceal when you are a little more on the upper hand? Also the added lenght of a shotgun can very badly limit your mobility.
I had to take the NRA sponsored gun course to get my CCW. They have some very good advice on gun use and safety. But, they have their hotdogs in there also. No matter where you go or what you do you'll run into that. For some reason it always seems that you run into Cop/FBI or whatever wannabees when you talk guns. I'm am NOT implying anyone responding to your post are like that. There has been some real sane and well meaning advice given.
But as I said, it's a persnal choice. Good Luck in whatever you decide, and practice, practice, practice. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

As I overheard once, "Just bacause you can buy an airplane, that doesn't mean you can fly it." There is a book that I could recommend. I"m not sure about the title, but I think it is "In the Gravest Extreme". It was written by Massad Ayoob. Maybe this link will work web page Ayoob is recognized as one the best when it comes to real world advice. Read all you can, that he has written. He does travel about the country teaching classes. They are not cheap, and not easy to get into. But are worth the time and effort. I've spent years with firearms, mostly competitve shooting. I don't think I've ever bought a firearm with the intentions of killing someone with it. However, I do posses a CCW permit, and seldom carry concealed. Deadly force is a last resort. When all else fails. Plain and simple.

Richard, I work in the firearms business. For a shotgun, I would suggest a 12 gauge home defense shotgun. A Mossberg or Remington will do just fine for that. Get the 18 inch barrel with the 7 or 8 round magazine. The handgun is a whole different story. You need to decide wether or not you want a wheel gun (revolver) or a semi auto pistol. Try your local gun club and ask the guys there if you can try out their guns. Or ask any friends of yours that may own firearms. One thing to remember about guns. They are indeed a tool. If you decide to pull a firearm on a person with a gun, you had best be ready to pull the trigger on it and not hesitate. It might be the last thing you do if you hesitate.
I have never had to use any of my firearms for protection. But I wouldn't think twice about using it if I had to. I carry a S&W Model 642 hammerless revolver. It is a 5 shot 38+P Airweight that weights 15 ounces. You can carry it in the front pocket of your pants without it being noticed. It can be pulled out in rapid time without hanging up on your pants (no hammer) It fits nicely in my motorcycle jacket also. Please get the proper training before carrying a handgun. It may save your life or someone elses. Don't ever get the feeling that because you have a gun that you are safe. That feeling would be a false sense of security.

Sounds like things are looking up Richard. As for the gun issue - for home protection - I think it's been covered pretty well. A 12 gauge and practice using it is hard to beat, and far less likely to shoot yourself with. A pistol and it's short sight radius make for the barrel to be in any direction way too easily - especailly in a panic situation.
Hopefully you'll never require the use of either, but as in the NRA magazine each month, many do.

As for the the redneck remark, as Curly would say; " Why I resemble that remark !" LOL

Good Luck with your present "sitch-e-ashun".

Geeeez, my redneck rebuttal was tongue in cheek /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

However, one way to tell a real redneck from a poser is to walk up to him a call him a **** redneck /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif. If he struts and takes it as a compliment he is a poser /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif. If he pulls a knife out, we like Confederate style Bowies, and then begins to whittle on your hide--yep--you found yourself a genuine redneck /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif. J

Following that logic..........a tractor is useless for working unless your butt is always in the seat.

A gun is a tool just like all the other tools you have. It doesn't have to be in your hand 24/7. It just has to be accessible when needed.

Hmm. I usually make a conscious decision to use a tool. I decide when to use my tractor, to use a hammer, or to use any other legitimate tool. If I wanted to use a firearm as a tool to produce meat, that would also be a conscious decision.

But, I'm not aware of anyone who made a conscious decision to be attacked, and therefore determined the appropriate time to have a firearm in their hand to defend against that attack.

Your comparison of a tractor to a firearm would be appropriate if someone else made a decision and ordered you to "plow instantly, or die!". Then, you literally would have to have your butt planted in the tractor seat 24/7, or suffer the consequences.

Having a firearm "accessible" even 6" from your hand is useless if someone else sees your weapon, decides it is a threat to them, and fires first.

There is no defense against psychopaths, drunks, or someone with nothing to lose. They aren't going to wait for you to acquire your "accessible" tool. Fortunately, most of us come across those people about as often as we come upon someone who orders us to "plow instantly".

A firearm would be an effective tool for personal defense if you find a buddy with a similar weapon, stand back to back, and both slowly circle, with your weapons cocked, alert for such an attack. Even then, it would be a gamble, unless you are willing to fire first. And, even then, it would be useless if your attacker was concealed. Maybe if you cleared a field of fire about 2,000 yards in diameter and circled in the center of it...

OkeeDon -

If you want to not have a firearm, that's fine - it's your decision - but you are absolutely wrong that it is impractical and of little use to have a firearm to protect oneself. Please quit making such ridiculous statements in order to push your political agenda.
