Just throwing this out there, Google Chia seeds, very promising reports about this little gem. I may give them a try to see if I feel any different, but for the most part they seem promising and have been around a long time. Of course they aren't cheap.

Is that where chia pets come from? Yikes, I'm already quite hairy.

The nutritional value of the seeds seems good, I'll check to see if sprouts or seeds or more beneficial for heart diets. Mostly I'm seeing what not to eat which is about 75% of the products in grocery stores. Any additions are aways welcomed. The Quote of the month from the heart Doctor I visited yesterday: "Man hunts animals, but in the end the animals kill man." The Dr. has preformed almost 700 stent procedures, and has a goal of entering 1100 patients into the study. He has dedicated a lot of his time trying to educate the public on prevention and reversal. My kind of Dr.

Thanks for the thread Don. I pulled an older Ornish book off our bookshelf and both my wife and I are working toward a low fat diet. We both have pretty significant heart issues that are being kept in check by medications. I am a believer that the meds will not suffice as we get older...and our quality of live and longevity will be threatened if we do not drastically change our eating habits and lifestyle.

Hopefully this thread will be continued over time...Thanks again...going out to buy a more current Ornish as well as the other book you referenced...TMR

TMR, I'll add to this thread over time. I was so glad to find out that heart disease can be halted and reversed by diet alone (and exercise). I'm in control of my bad genes and will not feed them. Everyone is different and the extent of damage by fatty foods is different also. It takes 18-24 months to stabilize the plaque with the low fat diet. I don't know if I can survive another close call - 50% of heart attack victims don't get a second chance.

Good luck on your lifestyle change. If you are looking for a vacation of a lifetime for your life check out the Holistic Cruise 2012 and the speakers that will be there. The information, FOOD, and people are wonderful!

Heart Doctors recommend Ground Flax seed. So lets compare per oz.

Flaxseed has vitamins C,E,K,B6,Thiamin, niacin, Folate, Pantothenic Acid. Chia seed has none of these.

Flaxseed has 6388 Omega 3 fatty acids and 1655 Omega 6 fatty acids.
Chia seed has 4915 Omega 3 Fatty acids and 1620 Omega 6 fatty acids.

Flaxseed has more Magnesium, Potassium, Zinc, Copper, Maganees and Selenium than Chia seed.

Chia seed wins the calcium score with 177mg compared to flaxseed's 71mg.

I do believe for heart disease Flaxseed wins because of the Omega 3 fatty acids which you need on a plant based diet.

However if you have a bone disease chia seeds with more calcium would be on top.

Flaxseed is also 1/3 of the cost of chia seed.

Thanks Don...my paternal grandfather died from heart attack at 65 and my father died from second heart attack at 50. As I said, I have "managed" blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, etc with a couple of stents (2001) and multiple medications. I am using your reminder to get serious about lifestyle change...not just a diet. I believe if I start now at age 64 I have a better chance of a higher quality of live and perhaps a longer life :)

BTW...first two days have been pretty spectacular (as in most diets)...lost 5+ pounds and blood sugar fell from 131 pre to 108 today. Ya I know...check back in 90 days and one year :)

I'll monitor and add to thread over time also...Thanks Again...seems like you got the attention of a number with your story...TMR

Don ....Where can I buy Flaxseed...?

By the way...A Trader Joes opened up close to us and my wife and i went to check it out and bought some flax seed chips...they were real low calorie, no salt, no cholesterol and we really enjoyed them....a few days later I had an appt. with my dermatologist and I asked her if she had been to the new Trader Joe's and she said she had and I told her how good the Flaxseed chips were and she said..." I hope you don't have to take a drug test because it will show up as if you used Marijuana.." So just so everyone knows...be careful with flaxseed intake if you are subject to drug tests...Can you imagine trying to explain that and getting them to believe you...? LOL - I don't have to worry about drug tests.

Thanks

TMR, My cardiologist just this week cut my beta blockers in half. I think I'm felling better, and my BP and HR are about the same. When I stopped taking my ace inhibitors a month ago my BP went up for about two weeks and settled back down.

I'll find out in 4 more weeks how much my LDL rises (or not) by cutting the statins in half.

Are you going on a completely plant based diet + no added fat/oil? There is a withdraw period of about 90 days with the fats, hang in there, it is worth it.
