Are you going on a completely plant based diet + no added fat/oil? There is a withdraw period of about 90 days with the fats, hang in there, it is worth it.

Withdrawal in what way ... loss of beloved foods, or ... ?

txdon...we are working hard at plant based + no added fat/oil + non-fat dairy such as skim milk and non-fat yogurt. So far we are doing quite well. I anticipate more "emotional" times at family dinners, etc...now just the two of us so far. Need to learn more why non-fat dairy maybe should be eliminated...leaving that for a bit down the road :)

Our current goal is to build a "base" of menu items we both like/accept. Today we shopping for ground flax seed...and then will eliminate the fish oil capsules.

Congrats on the med reduction. Yesterday I stood up once and had to sit down as I felt faint...tells me I will likely need to reduce my heart meds a bit pretty soon...better do a few BP readings. Also, blood sugar last two reading just under 110...vs average AM reading of about 130 "before".

Weight has dropped an amazing 8 pounds in three days...nice start but certainly will slow way down...last 2 days have been one pound each. I think I need to go from 205 (5'10") to around 160 according to the charts...ie 45 pounds. I will be interested to see where "normal" weight will settle over time.

Thanks TMR

beepington, it's the craving need for fatty foods. I got the 90 days info from nutritionist Jeff Novack at one of his lectures. I didn't count the days. When I realized the extent of how food was causing my heart disease and how food could reverse my heart disease the transition was easy. I also have that memory of the ambo trip as incentive.

For those who did not suffer a heart attack I think there would be some incentive missing but when you see the weight melting away and you can still eat all you want, that is a nice incentive. Working with your Dr. reducing eliminating medication and felling better will also keep you motivated.

The only non-invasive scan I know of to actually see the improvement in the blood flow in the heart is the PET scan which is the scan they use in the Century Study in Houston. You can get the scan without being in the study but it is expensive at about $3,000.00 but a heat attack (stent relieved) is at least $60,000.00.

I was slowly getting to the complete diet but had not quite reached it before my heart attack. I had eliminated meat and dairy but fat was still in my diet. It was very hard, besides the cravings I was on no meds and no pain, but I knew of my heart disease through the Calcium Scan. I thought I had time......
I didn't know that the plaque at 30-40% is the most vulnerable for rupture, which causes the heart attack. I didn't know it take 18-24 months on the diet to reverse heart disease.

TMR, here is the program that is used in the Century Study for reversing heart disease. When I went to Houston Tuesday it was so wonderful and impressive for me to see in large letters on the wall by the door (In one of the largest hospitals in the Texas medical center)

THE WEATHERHEAD CENTER
FOR PREVENTING AND REVERSING ATHEROSCLEROSIS
AT
THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS MEDICAL SCHOOL AT HOUSTON
AND
MEMORIAL HERMAN HOSPITAL

The program http://www.uth.tmc.edu/pet/Assets/pdf/gould-guidelines.pdf

Their program is not as strict as Dr. Esselstyn's program but for me I believe I must try my very best and Esselstyn's program includes everything in the Century Study and more.

Don...printed out the program...a great source of info...helps in defining our "program".

On 11/8 I have my periodic "NM Myocard Perfusion Scan Panel"...which is an exercise stress test with infusion of a type of radioactive dye into veins both before and after your stress test. Shows impact on heart/blood circulation before and after stress/exercise. For the last approximately 10+ years I have had this test every 12-18 months...been closer to 2 years this time. I no not think this is the "PET" scan version shown in the Houston document but will ask. I feel blessed to have this type of monitoring and treatment...now I need to do my part :)

My father died at 50 from second heart attack...he (and grandfather who died of heart attack at 65) did not have the benefit of today's heart care. My cardiologist is one of two founders of the Minneapolis Heart Institute which operates out of the Allina Heart Hospital that was completed just a couple of years ago and is one of the largest and most highly regarded heart facilities in MN...along with the Mayo Clinic.

I will have an interesting conversation with my cardiologist after my test.

Thanks...TMR

P.S. My wife and I worked too **** hard to build up our retirement assets just to either die from heart problems...or not be able to live an active life style. TMR

Brin, ground flax seed can be bought in most grocery stores. I get mine at HEB it is Bob's Red Mill brand. Here is what it looks like:
Bob's Red Mill Organic Flaxseed Meal, 16-Ounce Packages (Pack of 4): Amazon.com: Grocery & Gourmet Food

I haven't heard of the problem with drug testing.

Thanks Don,

I will look for it at our grocery store...by the way....I am 6'1" and always weighed around 185# up until about 1998 when I realized I had slowly gained 37# and weighed....222# - I was disgusted...I tried a diet and the weight came off and right back on...so I changed my eating habits completely...reduced fats to near 0...only small amt. of olive oil, or smart balance butter substitute, only lean meats with no visible fat, low carb veggies and eliminated all fried foods, bread, potato , pasta, sugar or sweets and as a result I weighed in at 169# at the end of one year....so that was a total loss of 53# and I have kept it off all this time...so it is not a diet, it is a lifestyle change and it was hard for the first 30 days or so for me but as you have said...seeing the weight come off and more importantly feeling so much more energy...it has been well worth it...I would encourage anyone to grit their teeth for 30 days and they will have it made for life if they stick to it...

Good for you Don...keep it up...

Western, that is the nutrition site I also use, it's very good!

Brin, you are well within the normal range on your BMI. I'm on the side of normal closest to overweight but am confident more weight will come off. Now that the 112 degrees days have passed I'm spending more time outside. You are right about the energy, a definite increase.

TMR have you seen the movie "Forks Over Knives"? It explains about the Dairy. You can order it on-line. There is also another documentary, a little on the humorous side, about why we think dairy is good it is also available on-line.
It's called "Got The Facts On Milk".

Got The Facts On Milk? | The Feature Documentary

I have cows on my land and I know the Dairy Industry does not feel threatened because 85% of the people who have heart disease do not change their diet significantly. Cow and cow products will always be in demand for those who cannot adjust their lifestyle.

Don - I forgot about Dairy...we, the wife and I eat or drink none of that...no milk , butter, cheese etc. except we buy -0- fat -0- cholesterol imitation cheese and eat that ..it has 45 calories a slice and it helps to once in awhile have it as a treat..LOL - other than that we have not had any dairy products in over 12 yrs...and don't miss it..

One other motivation I had to lose the weight...I knew I was getting older and I did not want to be embarrassed and be a Fat man if something happened to me...I figured the nurses and docs would discriminate...and I realized I had a choice ...I could grow older and be fat...and deal with that lifestyle or grow older and be in shape and full of energy and have a better chance of sticking around longer....I chose the latter and I sure hope it works out for me...and you too and anyone else who grabs the bull by the horns....LOL

Brin and Don...I will take a look at eliminating dairy...including non-fat dairy...once we reach the 30 day mark. Seems like Ornish and others state to consume non-fat dairy only "in moderation"...which is what we are doing now.

Don...I have moderate speed internet...will wait until we are at our Mpls town home to download the movie...where we have high(er) speed connection.

Thanks Again...BTW...had "home made" vegetable soup for lunch w/zero fat "canned" broth...very good...maybe a little too much salt but OK for now.
