I'm so glad you posted that picture of the seal. I was wondering what the heck was the purpose of those two long bolts I could see on each side of the crankshaft. It looked like something was removed, but I wasn't sure. Now all the pieces of the puzzle are there.:)

Now look at the bottom, there is a rubber seal that goes in there ... the new one is not as thick as the old one. The dealer is contacting Long to see if there are more than one available ... so far he says its the one. I sure do not want to put the pieces together if it ain't the right one!!!

I had fun working with my Grandfather, too. He wasn't the most patient, and became excited easily, but he could be funny. That was back in the 1950's, and he was an antique dealer. He used to go from Michigan to Wisconsin and pick up a load of buggies and other horse drawn vehicles. He would remove the wheels and anything loose and tie the wheels up to the sides of the truck, and put the shafts and seats on a rack over the cab. He would tip the buggies up on end and tie them together. I would help him undo it all and put them back together. There were no Interstate highways then, either, it was small towns, Chicago, and stop lights all the way. I don't have any grandkids, or I would teach them some pranks to play on their parents, and show them how to rebuild engines.

The two halfs are back together. Now we will add the oil, transmission fluid. Before we put the fuel tank and all the rest back we are going to pressure wash everything, sand blast and paint it ... then complete the final assembly. Sure am hoping that all is well ...

Folks you just can not believe who is more excited ... me or the boy!!!!

Let me tell you ... Its simply wonderfull to see this boy on the creeper using wrenches. He was city boy who didn't know a ratchet from a wrench. Where to check the oil ... now he is asking me, Grandpa can you hand me the 3/4 with the 1/2 inch ratchet!! And looking in the manual and telling me how many gallons of oil and fluids to use.

The other day I picked up feed in the feed buggy, got two caps from the mill .. had them stacked on top of each other when he got home he said I see you you got a new cap ... I said well take a look, he said hey there's two!! He picked the green one. When we got outside he said Grandpa you look good in your new hat ... I said almost as good as you look!!

I think what I'm seeing here is a kid that had little direction and nothing to make him feel unique or accomplished until now. I'm sure he has lots to talk about with his friends and experiences to share with other kids that may be doing some of the same things. It sounds to me like you've given him an avenue to fit in and be a part of a team rather than feel isolated and rejected. I'm sure you are aware that at 12 years old, you caught him just in time. His behavior would be really hard to change by the time he became 15 or 16. Hearing your stories sure puts a smile on my face too.:)

Next step is to find him an "Old" car. One that regular people could work on like a 50's or 60's model and the two of you can rebuild it. When he gets old enough to drive, it would be the best gift he ever had and one that he'd remember forever.

Now there is an excellent idea ... I'm thinking like an old pick up truck.

In this fast paced world the best thing you can do with a kid is spend time with them working on a common goal. Fixing/building things is perfect for this. I spend time with my 2 boys and 1 girl working on things like mowers, tractors, cars and models. I found a non-running 92 Civic to work on with my eldest son. When all was said and done it may have been cheaper to buy one in better shape but the time spent is priceless. So many life lessons plus a nice running car for him to get to school in. I do not miss car pooling the kids.
