Woman run over, killed by tractor...

An 80-year-old woman standing on a tractor driven by her husband was thrown from the tractor and run over Monday in east-central Kansas, authorities said.
The woman, Pauline M. Fitzpatrick, of Neosho Falls, was pronounced dead at the scene just north of Piqua, in Woodson County, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

A highway patrol accident report indicated Joseph T. Fitzpatrick, 80, also of Neosho Falls, was driving a farm tractor at about 1:30 p.m. east on 180th Road while his wife stood on the back of the tractor.

The tractor hit a rut in the road and Pauline Fitzpatrick was thrown forward under the left rear tire, authorities said.

Joseph Fitzpatrick wasn't injured, the report indicated. The accident occurred about seven miles west of Iola, which is about 100 miles south of Topeka

I grew up riding on tractors, and yes, it probably was dangerous. But so is riding or driving on the highway in a car.

Tragic that it had to happen though.

It sure is a shame....

Still, I can't help but think that I hope I am able to jump on the back of a tractor for a ride when (and if) I hit 80.

Also can't help but think going out that way was better than some of the alternatives...

Sad certainly...but being able to reach a healthy 80 is a blessing in itself. Too bad she did not live to reach a health 90...such is life...

You missed my point...or ignored it.

Some activities seem harmless, like taking riders on your tractor, but they can still be deadly.

Didn't miss your point nor ingore it.

Tractors are dangerous. Riding as a passenger on one that is not designed for it is even more dangerous. The fact is, we still do it. I would imagine the 80 year old couple have been doing it for probably 60 years.

It happened. It's a shame it happened, but it did.
Unfortunately, it will happen again.

Not being knowledgeable about the accident may the couple have been using the tractor for transportation as a car or driver's licence was not available?
