WON\'T START - YANMAR 3110D

Being retired on low income, I tried to replace my old Ford 4000 diesel at as low a cost as possible. I read up on Yanmar and decided to look for a large one. I found a YM3110D in Edmonton, Alberta CA for what I thought to be a good price and just took delivery this morning.

Unfortunately, the closest loading ramp was 3 miles away. The tractor started promptly and ran very smoothly. But after unloading the tractor and starting toward home, the tractor gushed a lot of smoke and quit running after going only a few hundred feet. I couldn't get it started with many tries and the truck driver was gone by then, so I had to have someone tow it to my home. It still will not start, although it does make an effort to do so at times. I'm wondering if it just flooded out after getting warmed up. My Ford had glow plugs, so I've never used ether, and hesitate to use it now.

What do you suggest I do about this tractor? I very much need an owner's manual and service manual. The freight truck driver didn't know anything about the tractor or what the various knobs were for. sTANmCcLUSKEY@CS.COM

Re: WON\'T START - YANMAR 3110D

As was posted earlier, make sure the fuel is turned on and that it is clean and not plugging the line. This is especially true if the tractor sat for a while. If it ran out of fuel you may need to bleed the fuel lines to get it to start. Good time to change all the fluilds and filters.

Re: WON\'T START - YANMAR 3110D

"gushed alot of smoke and quit" Sounds like water in the fuel. I would remove the bowl and empty it. Bleed the system. This means all the way to the injectors since the lines may contain water. The decompression lever will help to not run the battery down. Once you get it home drain the whole fuel tank.

Thanks,

Re: WON\'T START - YANMAR 3110D

Stan, it may help to know that the "on" position of the fuel valve is pointing straight down, as opposed to most fuel valves pointing parallel with the line for "on". Pointing straight up is "off" pos. If it was "off", you will now have to bleed air from the fuel lines to get started.

Re: WON\'T START - YANMAR 3110D

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions. I also was able to contact the person from whom I purchased the tractor and learned more details about its normal operation and what the various handles and knobs are for. I then tightened loose battery cables, charged the battery, checked for fuel to the injector pump, held the glow plugs on for about 40 seconds, and then adjusted the decompression lever while trying to start the engine. It was still rough starting that first time, but now runs quiet and with no smoke. It also starts very easily. It would have been nice to have an owners manual on this.
