Wood And Thinwall Tubing Bar Joists?

I saw these for the first time today. They make up the entire roof structure in a brand new fast food restaurant.

I am sure there are engineering documents proving this will be sufficient. But, it sure took me by surprise, to see that was all it took to hold the roof up.

They are not at all large. And, they are on like, 3' centers.

All that attaches the tubing to the wood stringers, is one small screw that goes through both pieces of metal.

Amazing.

Its a pretty well thought out design and the materials have been use for this application for a long time.... Look up "warren truss" to have better understanding of design....

I think we have all seen welded steel bar joists used in the traditional steel form, with angle iron on both sides of the top and bottom, to support the roof of a commercial building.

Though the concept is the same, steel bar joists are substantially different in substance, from what I see here.

I've also seen all wood Warren trusses used, and they are also substantially beefier, than this is.

And then you have these... And it Oriented Strand Board (OSB) and there is rules where you can or can not drill through them for conduits or water pipes or drain pipes...

Very similar to Space Joists. I considered them for my place.

In Ohio? with snow loads to contend with ? I'd like to see the engineering on those.

Are you sure that's not a false roof? If that's is the finished product (no roofing panels) its could be for aesthetics only and there is a true roof structure above it.
I gotta believe there something up there to keep the sound down in a commercial building.

One season of carpenter bee could bring down that entire building, if those were structural,,

You are correct. As a general guideline, any holes for wiring, piping, etc. should be placed in the center of the web and must not exceed a certain size.

As I said, that's the entire roof structure. That is why it's surprising.

There is no where for them to hide any additional support. It's a one story building.

And, by current standards, they don't seem to care about the aesthetics of the inside ceiling.

We have two other restaurants, (a BK, and a Chipotle), where they used all wood trusses, which really look crappy, and they don't cover them up anymore. It's all open, just like this. With no sound control material.
