Bruce,

I'd get more opinions but I've heard that mixing sand in with stain and applying to the surface works.

Bruce,

There is a specific type of sand that is made for mixing with paint. It is clean and works well. Check with a quality local paint store that carries it to determine if you can use it with stain. I would imagine that it would work. If you do use sand, be sure to constantly mix the stain to keep the sand in suspension.

I built my deck out of composite stuff called TREX. It's really pricey, but ours in NOT slick when wet. If you are just doing steps, it wouldn't cost a fortune.

My 2 cents.

I have a wood deck and it is not slippery. Wondering why yours is? Possibly, if some 'slime' or mold is growing on it, then a treatment of a mixture of bleach will cut through the mold. I wouldn't put paint or stain on it as that can also make the wood slippery when wet. If a stain, then a penetrating stain with preservative is what I would use.

I was wondering the same thing.
My house has two new decks on it out of PT and when you get a dusting of snow on it... look out. It's like walking on ice and even the dogs have a hard time of it.
I didn't know you could add sand to stain. I'll give that a try this summer.

purchase anti-slip grit to add to paint (locally rust-oleum brand at home depot). however, DO NOT mix into the paint - instead put in an old peanutbutter jar and drill a bunch of small holes (1/8" or smaller) in the top (like a salt shaker). then paint steps and sprinkle the grit on the top coats only - as you paint. i did this inside my motocross trailer and it is like walking on sandpaper. it works better this way as the sharp edges of the grit ramain on the surface of the paint and are not coated with paint - yet they take on the paint's color so you can't see the grit. only negative i have encountered is that it is so gritty that you can't sweep out the trailer - i have to use the leaf-blower to get the fine stuff out.
