Wood heat and high oil prices

I was concerned about that also, so I'm planning on hanging a stainless baffle under the radiator to keep the flame from directly hitting it. I gave a radiator to one of my campers this summer to use as a grate between the wood furnace cones he uses as a fireplace. They have a fire every night and it seemed to hold up under that extreme use, so hopefully with the baffle for some protection, it'll last for a while. If not, I can see me welding up something like beenthere's got next summer. But thanks for the input and concern.

As long as there is water in the radiators, I don't think the fire will get them above about 200°. The water jacket around my boiler is about 9 gal, and the fire is in the 'inside' barrel on some ashes. There is a hinged smoke curtain that hangs at the door which helps slow any smoke-back when the door is opened for more wood, but nothing else inside. The thimble for the chimney is high at the back, and the back is a flat steel plate. I'd like a stainless steel one but so far this one has held up well. The door is airtight, and the 'hard' part of fashioning a new boiler.

HGM - If I were to add a wood stove to my #2 camp, would close up the fireplace front so it's airtight and install a Vermont Woodstove similar to what SkyPup shows in his attachment. Only difference from his is that I would pipe it into the existing fireplace. This way you have all sides of the stove radiating heat into the living area.

Saving dollars on burning wood is important, but in my opinion, wood heat cant be beat - Sit back in my chair in the winter and fall asleep next to the woodstove on a regular basis /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Same here. Would keep using it even if fuel oil was cheap. It is amazing to watch people who have never had wood heat enter the house and immediatly back up to the stove to warm their buns. Must be a trait carried over from way back in the cave man days.
