I used to do the wood shed. 24' x 24' with 10' ceiling. Held a lot of split wood, but had problems with racoons using for their latrine. Once they started, it became unbearable (and deep!!). Put in 8 6x6 treated posts, 2x10 rim boards, and 24' trusses with 2' overhang.

But I moved the wood to pallets now, and cover the tops with rubber roofing squares to shed water. Dries outside, and is ready for burning after two years drying. Move the pallets with pallet forks either on FEL or 3 ph. Split and stack right away on the pallet, and then don't touch the split wood until ready to burn it.

I rather stack wood out in open..dry's quicker also easy to keep area clean than in my woodshed...around first Oct. when I trap wood pile.

I wood:)D) agree. Stacking it outside allows it to dry. The wind and sun is key here.

I also agree it takes about 2 years for it to season. The 1st season I let the rain and snow get to it....the 2nd season I get cover over the top of it and then after a good long dry stretch I move it inside until the burn takes place.

To tell if it is seasoned properly look at the ends for cracking or splitting. You want each stick to have some weight to it. If it's light in weight, you've "over seasoned it" in which it will burn fast with less heat.

Here is our shed. The sides are tin and come off for easy venting through the summer. I put them back on in late August or early September to keep the rain and snow out. We have 2 years of wood in here (a little over 7 cords) so it's always nice and seasoned. The shed is built in 8 foot sections with dividers in between so you can have wood at different ages in each one. The overhang on the front really keeps the rain out and the steel roof is cheap and maintenance free (used steel). I like the design a lot and the only thing I did wrong was not make the overhang of the roof a bit bigger at the back.

Nice shed jimmyj, but that would be a rattlesnake condo down here. Where are you located TWD?

Pat's HolzHausen

I use the holz hausen method. I find it does a couple of things.
1. is stable
2. dries wood quickly
3. by using a guide stick you know when its done
4. sheads snow easily
5. lets me stack more wood in a smaller space.

what i have done is taken 4 pallets. put them in a square. drawn a rough circle on them so i know where to being my outer loop. taken a scrap 1by 3 and like the article marked the stick at 5'8. i just stack up to the top of the stick and depending on when its stacked by november its ready. Now since i had wood for this year i was a bit slower stacking/cutting it so if i need it it will be ready by jan/feb. I find that if i dont tarp it until the threat of snow it dries faster.

other tbn'ers have stacked this way do a search for holz hausen and you will see more pics.
once i get done with my last square stack pile i am only going to use the hh method.

We try to build a good 2 3/8 pipe frame about 3 feet or so off the ground with a hog wire bottom where the wood sits, anything to discourage snakes from roosting in the pile.

Here's my work in progress-a combination of free pallets and junk wood that I got a deal on at Lowes for $30:

At this point I just need to put the back wall up and put the roof on.
