I've done wood for a bit and have tried all kinds of drying methods. Thru trial and error, I found that the reason wood takes 2 years is because of how its stacked. If you put it in a woodshed that is enclosed, it takes forever especially if you are more than 2 rows deep. I once stacked white oak 3 rows deep outside and after 2 years, it still wasn't dry. I now stack it one row deep. Yes it takes up space as my row is 90' long and 5' high. The same white oak is ready to burn after a year. Obviously this is not conducive to a wood shed but you at least need space between rows for faster drying. It seems critical to faster wood drying to not enclose the wood. The pain in the neck part is moving it to the woodshed. One of the advantages of the single row, is to be able to push a bucket load of wood with one shot by cozying up the tractor bucket next to the wood pile, getting on the other side and pushing with a 4' 2x8 board that I put handles on. (drilled a 1" hole and inserted a 1" dowel) At least loading the bucket goes fast.

I built a 'salt box' style of shed. Longer roof(shorter height) on one side which I hang a tarp from for protection once the wood is dry. This was built very fast with the exception of the roof and it is board and batten. It holds 8+ cords - 8'v16'x7'.

If I was to do it again I would build on a slab. Green wood has a lot of weight... they say a cord of green wood is over 1000lbs!

Well this seems like as good a place to ask as any...I have four pine trees between which I have been stacking my wood for years, palets on the ground and two sides, then I throw a large piece of rubber roofing over it. seems to work ok.

The PITA is durring winters with lots of snow I have to shovel off the snow to be able to throw the EPDM up onto itself to get to the wood.

So I have been toying with the idea of using the pines to build a shed roof and throwing the rubber roofing on top of the shed roof. I was thinking of attaching a sort of ledger board around 8 feet up on two of the pines and then putting 2x6 attached to the ledger sloped back down to the pallets on the back side.

I am concerned about the movement of the trees, so I thought I would attach the 2x6 only to the ledger.

comments welcome:thumbsup:

Hope this is not construed as a hijack:D

Just a couple corrections...8'x16'x8' would be 8 cords.
(4'x4'x8' = 128 cu. ft = 1 cord)

And depending on the species and moisture content of the wood, a cord is usually over 4,000 lbs. !! Just FYI

Also, nice wood sheds you have built there. And a slab would be good too. :)

Gentlemen, did you read the comments at the bottom of the holtz hausen website linked in an earlier post???

.

Did now. Thanks for pointing that out. Very funny. Guess they probably aren't worth all of the work after all. TBN version of a snipe hunt? I was actually thinking about building one!

Yes, read them and agree that the concept doesn't hold "water". But does hold the moisture in. :D

As well, the firewood sticks standing on end around the center pole would not lose length even if by chance they did dry. Wood only shrinks across the grain. Maybe the outer pieces are dry when the center ones rot away from staying wet, such that the pile settles down around the center pole. And the pics tell the story that it is a lot of work piling wood that way, only to have the pile fall apart because it wasn't "perfect". :)

The reason they fall, is because of the way its stacked.... let me explain.
The first row on an HH, that i do is turned on its side to give you the lean/cant intward.
after that i just stack as usual, but every other row i slide in 1-2 inches so that when it settles it doesnt come crashing down.
Once again, it does work, for me its stable, i can climb up the side of it with out it falling over. since you are putting smaller round pieces in the middle it makes the entire structure more stable, any odd piece goes in the middle.
I read the comments on the website too...and just wanted to say its all in how you stack it. I will only stack with an hh anymore. I get more in a smaller area, it looks nicer, and is more stable.
(the bruks ax company recommends stacking the hh way, every use a bruks? they know axes.)

I prefer to make my woodsheds portable:D

I have ~6 built so far, they hold roughly 1 face cord each. I'm hoping to make 6 more this winter. Pallets, 2x4s, deck screws, osb, and roll roofing.

I drop them right at my sliding glass door as needed, which is in the same room as the wood fireplace insert. Works well for me.

thats really a nice portable woodshed. You can just drop the wood right off. really smart design!!!
