Wood Siding Recomendations

I know you said you weren't interested in Cement siding, but there are some things to think about. Do you have wood boring bees in the area where you are going to build ? The boring bees don't (can't) get into Hardy Plank Siding. Siding8.JPG This is the Pre Stained Hardy Plank in Cedar Stain with 50 year warranty - Most of ours is under wrap around porch - no bees in our siding !

Thanks for all your comments
Why not Hardi? - I prefer the natural look of wood and stone but not so much shakes, bricks are great just don't seem right for this location
Durability - Carpenter Bees and Woodpeckers are in the area which is a concern I had not considered
Maintenance - I have owned a house with wood siding and did not think the upkeep was excessive
Coating - Natural, will depend on the wood grain and appearance, new age stain and sealants are getting high marks
Installation - Something I can install myself like board and batten would be preferred, cladding is doable by yourself, panels not safely
Cost - Our budget has some flex but not unlimited, looks like I need to price cypress, redwood and cedar before worrying to much about design.

My next house is going to be clad in Thermowood (Lämpöpuuyhdistys ry)
A chemical free process to modify timber to make it more durable and resistant to swelling and shrinkage with moisture changes It is Finish (Finland) technology that we use in New Zealand to turn Pine into a more durable and stable timber at least as good as cedar for a lower price than Cedar. There are some mills in the states with the Finish “Thermowood” technology and others with a similar system Google Thermally modified timber
Below a couple of photos of the last house not “Thermowood” built before I got the Finish Modification chamber so using chemically treated (copper chrome arsenic) pine

I have seen the "Thermowood" at the lumber yard in Conyers, GA so it should be available up in North GA.

To the person who asked why not T111? Look at my barn and you will see delamination. You will see cracks where the plys open up. Looked great 17 years ago. Looked good on the second paint job. Looks crummy right now. It will get one more paint job after I replace failed sheets. After that I hope I can replace it with something else that will require less maintenance and will look good between paint jobs.

Built my house in 1980. Mostly ceder with some brick. Restain every 10 years or so.
Still has that beautiful brown natural color. I did not want it to go gray.
I was expensive then, but I would do it again.
Good luck to you...

I did put some goodfellow factory stained siding on my house 4 years ago. Looking darn good, but now I just open a c'aimed with them because the stain on all the knot is peeling off on tye south and west walls. Starting to look ugly... Let see how the 15 years warranty on the stain is good.....
