Wood storage

I find snakes skins 6' or higher in my stacked wood. They are not poisonous so I do not mind. Black snakes are pretty good at mouse control. If I lived in Colorado, I would feel otherwise.

I try to spray my woodpile with an insecticide to control bugs, spiders and carpenter bees and had worked out pretty well. I have seen snakes around the property but haven't seen any in or near the woodpile which is on a cement slab under a roof. If there are any I hope my wife don't see it because that would effectively double my workload.

My last house I used a 6x12' dog kennel for wood storage. I opened it up so I could use the side of a chicken coupe on one side so I doubled my storage to a 12'x12' area. Then I put a 2x4 frame over the top with some old pole barn steel. That worked very well.

I had 4 areas like that full to the brim of oak and hickory that I basically gave away when I moved. That was a sad day.

I don't mind when there are black snakes hanging around the woodpiles, seems like we don't have much problem with rabbits, mice, squirrels, or chipmunks.

But I haven't seen them lately, and we've been getting all of the above...and I really don't like it when rats move in to harass the chickens. Took a bunch of traps and a ratproof feeder to knock the problem down, and I'm not convinced they are gone. I suspect if I could get my wife to stop feeding songbirds we'd be better off.

Last thing I saw living in my woodshed was a robin. Beats yellowjackets, anyway.

I seem to be going thru a lot of tarps for my wood stacks. The tarps from HD and TSC seem to last 2 years or less. What are you using for tarps and how long do they last.

Here is what I did. One half is green, the other half is seasoned. Empty one side this year use the other side next year and fill the empty side. Cut to 24" to fit the fireplace. The logs on the end are off sized pieces. I see many that use the sheds like they put shopping carts in at the big box stores.

Good thinking on the half and half.

Did you build the spitter?

Looks well made with tires big enough to roll with the terrain... splitter that is.
