Gotcha, my baffle is ceramic and I can take it out but I never have, I have a Hearthstone equinox and the baffle makes the smoke go up and around, cleans the glass quite nicely. Now that I think about it you’re idea of the removable baffle would give you the ability to pull it out and throw another one in if it warped over time and needed replacing and would take you no time to do it..

That's the idea if the bolts unbolt, then I started thinking maybe that 1/2" plate aint quite thick enough when it starts diverting all that fire. So I decided to weld couple spare pieces of 1/4" plates in the middle, after that I noticed the 1/2" plate lifted 1/4" so now the 1/4" add on plates will be facing down instead of up. Guess I should've left well enough alone or bought a 3/4" plate, I didn't think .030 wire would make enough heat to warp a 1/2" plate.

This "detail" is an important aspect when setting AMPERAGE.
(Taken from Lincoln)

Quote:
A welder should know the meaning of polarity, and recognize what effect it has on the welding process. With few exceptions, electrode-positive (reversed polarity) results in deeper penetration. Electrode-negative (straight polarity) results in faster melt-off of the electrode and, therefore, faster deposition rate. The effect of different chemicals in the covering may change this condition. The high cellulose covered mild-steel rod, such as Fleetweld 5P or Fleetweld 5P+, is recommended for use on positive polarity for general welding. Some types of shielded electrodes function on either polarity, though some operate on only one polarity. End Quote.

There's some good info, for some reason I had the polarity backwards, I was thinking that electrode negative was reverse polarity, I argued that for ten minutes with another welder at work last week, guess he was right, wont he love to hear that............

I wish you people would remember to unhook the air hose on a air tool before changing cutters......

Now it's firebrick time, finally on the downhill side after 50 hours. Starting with the grate holder, need to straighten that out with a little jack pressure then add a back up stiffener, next make new firebrick holders, the old ones was 1/8", new ones will be 3/8" on front and sides, 1/4" on back, I'll make the side ones next week..............

Hows your mirror welding, had to weld some plate to support firebrick behind the door.
IMG-0963.JPG IMG-0961.JPG IMG-0965.JPG

Because of improper firebrick and steel measuring when acquiring steel, had to do some trimming, a straight edge is a straight edge even if it's round but it's more wasted time and money.

Firebrick all in place, this should be done next week.

It is so hard for me to cut a straight line more than 12" even with a straight edge, mostly because I cant hold my breath for ten minutes, need to find a better way with breaking the bank..... Cutting torch - YouTube

I have a Hearthstone soapstone and love it. Takes longer to heat up than cast or steel but it holds the heat hours after the fire goes out.
