Wood to steel cutting bandsaw

I am 6'3" so I know all about raising stuff up to a workable height. I just picked up a 9" bandsaw and will be ordering the 3 phase setup soon.

I know you have the bandsaw already but I built a table for my portaband. It's very handy to use free hand or in a table and it comes out of the box ready to cut metal.

That is something I have been thinking about doing with my portaband.
How is the saw fastened to the table? Have any photos of the underside?

My saw conversion is using a motorcycle transmission to step down the speed... between the pulleys and 6 gears I should be able to dial most anything in. Pulley from the motor (1hp), pulley on the motorcycle crank (rod & top end removed), countershaft sprocket replaced with pulley to saw.... I'm still making covers to keep the oil in the trans but it's coming along.

I could be wrong but I think you can get vfd's for a single phase motor. All induction motors' speeds are controlled by frequency whether it be single phase or 3 phase.

I have never seen a VFD used to control a single phase motor. You can buy speed controllers but all VFD's are designed to generate 3 phase from either single, two or three phase power. I would strongly advise checking your setup with and expert to ensure you don't burn something up.

My father is well versed in all things electric so I will run it by him before purchasing anything as he will probably do the hook up!

Well I finally got around to working on this project.

I have the motor temporarily held in place with vise grips just for the test cut...Victory!

Was the only mod the speed reduction and a metal blade?
Did you have to change the blade guides?
Looks like you took the speed way down?
Seems like a straight forward mod.

New 1hp motor 3 step pulley 1/2 inch plate drilled for 5/8 shaft jack shaft 2 pillow bearings 2" pulley 10" pulley 53" v belt Had 5/8 shaft keyway cut by a machine shop 3/4x 96" Lenox Diemaster 6/10 blade Still need to; Secure the motor and find a way to adjust x-y Finish welding jack shaft plate Wire a start/stop switch Guards for pulleys/belts Eventually make a new cover for band pulleys out of aluminum Yes the fpm rate is significantly reduced but have not figured it out yet.

Did not change the guides

Very very impressed with this preliminary cut on 1/4x2-1/2" flat stock!
