Mowing Woodmaxx 62" Flail Mower on BX2200 For Mowing Lawn

I have a 54" MMM for my B2601 and I think it does a great job mowing though I don't have a fancy lawn, I also have a flail mower that mows equally well but is a lot more forgiving mowing uneven trails.

I run a 60"MMM on my BX2200 and have run it for 14 years on a lawn that is about one acre. Once in a while I do a couple of other lawns in the neighborhood. I can't complain and I would say it does a nice job. I don't have any of this "clumpy" stuff the orig poster mentioned. That makes me suspicion there is some issue with your deck (such as bent or missing deflectors around the blades under the deck ?) I've never seen clumpy grass laying around where I mow unless it was too tall when I mowed it. I believe you said the blades were sharp. Can't picture what other causes there might be. You might want to consider a bagger. I have one of the PTO-driven baggers on my BX2200 & they are a lifesaver in the fall with leaves. Rarely do I let the grass get high enough to need bagging.

By the way, I have NO experience with the Woodmaxx flail mower but friends who use the flail mowers say to me that they absorb a LOT of power. I'd try one out on a BX2200 in some medium high grass before buying one. I'm a little skeptical of your power to run a 62" flail mower.

Well, I took the dive and purchased one... I got the FM62 Woodmaxx. The BX2200 runs lifts it, and turns it just fine.

I cut my entire lawn with it and did a little bit of high grass cutting and no issues. Runs a little different than I am used to but it does what it needs to do.

Does a great job and stripes the lawn nicely. I am very impressed.

I even did a short video of me running it cutting some higher than normal grass.

It actually runs more efficient than the belly mower. I noticed that the tractor didn't struggle one bit even in my highest and thickest grass. The rotor turns so easily by hand it's not even funny. The belly mower just robs my tractor of HP -- I can see why it was giving my lawn such a hatchet job.

I should do a video of it turning off... it just sits there and runs and runs for about 2 minutes as it winds on down. Very good friction-less bearings in it!

Enjoy!

I think you're close on hp, but I think the MMM might bog down in tall grass more than the flail mower. Plus it fits with your longer term plans.

So, I think this is right?
How do you like the quality and design of the Woodmaxx?

Nice video.

Yup -- you are right. It might be the MMM might not be correct my application all the time. I think before I mow, I will have to assess the grass height carefully and choose the correct implement to use.

And yes... The BX2200 is probably the smallest you'd want to go on a flail of 5ft. What's funny is that I was looking at the specs on the potential upgrade tractor, and the B2650 (not the BX!), and it only weighs ~150 lbs more than mine without the loaders involved -- just straight up tractor. Which is what Woodmaxx is demonstrating this particular flail mower on their website. However, I'm still toying between a B2650, B3350 or go with a L3301. I just don't want something gigantic -- or stupid big, which I think the L3301 is overkill. But that's not going to be for a couple months.

Right now, the flail is the best option because the grass is thick due to the vast amounts of rain we've been getting. I know once summer kicks in, and we get a few weeks with minimal rain, the MMM does an OK job, because the grass doesn't grow much.

I love the quality and design of the Woodmaxx. Everything about it seems quite robust and overkill. I like the auto-tension belt system, and all the effective grease points. Along with the fact that Woodmaxx fills the gearbox up with oil and checks over everything before shipping/pickup. The Woodmaxx people are great, and it was nice to meet them in person at their location in Akron, NY.

Am I happy with it? Yes. Now I have two options to use to mow my lawn.

Good to hear you're happy with your woodmaxx. I'm seriously considering the 54" model for my BX2380. At just over 400#'s, I think it would be a good fit. Lighter than most 48" rear finish mowers.

You won't be disappointed. If I wasn't going to get a bigger tractor in the near future, I would've went for the 54" model. Not much difference in price either. Yes, the 54" is actually lighter than most good quality finish mowers, like King Kutters, etc. In fact, that was why I bought the FM62, only because it weighed about the same as a 60" KingKutter. But I wanted a universal mower. I am quite confident you will like a flail mower.

I also like how safe they are to use. After I videoed the part where I was mowing, I had a couple small twigs on the ground, and I mulched them up, and I liked how there was no fliers like I would've had with the belly mower.

One of the biggest things I like is the striping. Reminds me of an old school reel mower.

Not sure if you noticed the difference in sound... flail mowers have a unique sound too, it actually quite pleasing to the ears versus a whizzing high pitched rotary mower.

All I got to say is make sure you grease the heck out of farm equipment... I learned a while back, grease is a farmer's best friend. I plan on doing some finishing work with it tomorrow, and I am going to clean up my flail mower with my electric pressure washer then pump some fresh grease in all the zerks. Maybe even wax it too.

About greasing please be careful with regard to how much grease you use- no more than 5-6 pumps of moly high temperature grease in each flail mower rotor bearing. the rear roller should only need 4 pumps of grease in each bearing.

The fifty hour limit between greasing is a problem for me as the heat generated by the high speed rotation of the flail mower rotor will affect the lubricity of the grease.

I grease my flail mower after every 4 hours of operation as a rule simply because it is a 2 inch roller bearing sealed on one side.

The first set of flail mower rotor bearings lasted us almost 25 years in seasonal mowing use.
Our heaviest use is for picking up leaves and grass both in the fall.

Getting grease on belts is the quickest way to burn them up.
