What is the deal with suet?

Get (or make) some suet blocks, then put them up in feeders around the house. The birds will eat the suet and won't peck your house. At least, that's the theory!

You can also get some repellent spray. You spray it on your wood siding and it apparently tastes terrible and runs them off.

The best I can tell from google searching is that suet is a food source that simply attracts woodpeckers to eat it rather than searching for food in your siding.

We've got suet feeders around and the 'peckers still like to wake us up pounding on the gutters.

Maybe they're just not quite happy with the brand we feed 'em.

Suet only works if they're looking for food, if they're looking for a mate, then they're going to peck on something that makes a lot of noise.

Of course I'm sure they appreciate the snack after they've worked up an appetite hammering on the gutters and stovepipes!

Yeah, I'm thinking we're just making it easier for them to spend more time hammerin' and less time looking for food. :D

More I think about it, when one is ventilating my siding it's never the long trill that's heard across the yard, just erratic triplets or so of normal feeding vs the 'drumming' we're hearing from the pipes & gutters.

I had all the exposed wood on our house covered with vinyl siding, so I don't think a hummer will try to drill through the vinyl. I had no idea it was so common for them to hammer on metal rain gutters.

If you see a hummingbird trying drill through even wood siding, I want pics. :D
