Woods 5000 chipper shredder

I'm excited to be able to update this thread with my latest purchase. I bought a Bearcat chipper/shredder with blower. It was listed on CL and I happen to see it just after it was posted. The seller informed me I was 5th in line to see it:eek:. It was a single mother of three selling it to make ends meet. So after a bit of dicsussion with her she asked if she was listing it for too little.

She had it listed for $1200 but everyone else was trying to negotiate for less. I explained what it cost new and told her I'd be willing to give her $1500 for it since it had the blower. But I insisted she contact the other's ahead of me to see if they'd match my offer.

And to my excitement they did not. Now I normally don't offer more and didn't want to under cut anyone but I felt they were trying to swindle this poor lady. The first guy was offering $800 and the rest $1000. I'll post some pics later as it's rain/snowing now:(.

Matt

Sounds like you played fair and got a good deal to boot.
I am pretty sure you will like your new set up. Your tractor power is almost identical to my L3010 and I get along good with my bearcat chipper w/ blower. I hardly ever use the shreder but If you are going to use the shredder you might want to check the screen between the shreder compartment and the blower. There are several size screens available. I have the standard one with 7/8" holes. I can shred sticks and dry leaves but wet leaves clog the screen. You need the one with the biggest holes ( 1.25" I think ) to shred wet leaves and stuff that cake up.

As I suspected the pto shaft is way too short. So I'll need to get that corrected. It looks like I'll be able to use it with my Imatch so I'm happy about that. Pics as promised:

You will have to modifiy the top hook up point...that's what stopped me using my Deere QH (same as yours, BTW).

Also, on my 4400, I have to use that PTO Adapter I linked to a post or two back...even without the QH (which would require an even longer PTO drive shaft). This kind of surprised me since it all worked with my old 790 and the Pat's Easy Change.
One thing I don't know is how (or if) the previous owner had trimmed the driveshaft for use on his old Ford (8N or something of that era). I might be in the market for a new driveshaft too.

Getting back to the top link connection on the chipper, I plan on fabricating a piece to lower the chipper's connection enough to grab the QH hook. Since I don't want this to be permanent, I'll put flanges or other anti-rotation methods on the fabricated part. Still kicking around the design though.

I have a yoke that works for the top of the Imatch. I just tested the fit and it's going to work fine. I pulled the whole pto shaft off and think I'll just try to replace the entire thing. Figured I'd check the belts and bearings. Mice had packed the compartments full but to my relief didn't chew the belts. The belts look virgin and everything appears near new. Is there supposed to be an overrun clutch on the drive shaft? If so this one doesn't appear to have it.

I'd like to see a picture of that yoke...

No overruning clutch on mine either (did you mean slipclutch, BTW?). Should you get something in there that jams the chipper, the belts will slip and prevent damage to the tractor and hard parts of the chipper...they'll smoke like a b*tch!

I expect I'll need a new driveshaft too, if I want to use the chipper with the QH. Since I've just cleaned up from the winter (got several bushels of chips), it's not a big hurry...but Messick's isn't too far from me (maybe 30 miles) and I think I'll check out the length of a new drive shaft.

Alot of chippers come with an overrun clutch, I thought I saw one while looking at the Woods manual for the 5000. I need the new pto shaft even if I remove the Imatch. I'll try to snap a pic for you tomorrow. I went to TSC tonite to see if I could get another PTO shaft. TSC has really been disappointing me lately. They need to decide if they want to be a home improvement store or a tractor place.

I'd appreciate the picture!

Yeah, TSC sells a lot of clothing too...at least the local one (outside York PA).

I'm surprised that PTO Adapter won't work for you...works fine with my 4400 once I remove the QH. It's been a while since I pulled the PTO drive shaft half off the chipper, but IIRC, that's not a standard 1.375 x 6 spline yoke.

Nice looking chipper Matt, congrats!

TSC has been going down hill around here too. Went for some hydraulic fittings and hose and of course they wouldn't have any. I was happy to take my business to the JD dealer.

Martian, how will the chipper look behind a 110? I'll have to find out I guess.

TSC had about 10 pto shafts but all were square drive, no triangle style. I think I may disassemble the U joint itself and add the new pto shaft that way. Then the TSC unit would work, but man pto shafts are spendy:ashamed:.

Have you priced one from Bearcat, or Woods? I'd guess they're a bit spendy too. But you still might end up with a driveshaft that is too short.

Your idea of rebuilding what you have sounds good...that way you can get the length you need.

BTW, since you asked how the chipper will look behind a 110, there is (or was) a 15 minute Youtube video of a Woods or Bearcat chipper/shredder running behind an open station Deere 110. I've got the video in this PC (somewhere), but it's probably too big to upload.
