Backhoe Woods Backhoe

Does anyone have knowledge or experience with Woods Backhoe w/subframe damaging the top link of tractor??

Appearently I'm missing something because you don't use the top link with a subframe backhoe. I have a Woods 9000.

The dealer installed one on my L3710. I don't think it needs one either but the manual says to use it. The result is $2,800 worth of damage to rear housing. The dealer and woods rep both say it was a freak accident for the damage to occur and neither will help with expenses. I now have a 7500 w/subframe that I'm afraid to reinstall. Got any ideas??

You say you have a subframe but it sounds like your using a 3pt setup. A 3pt setup would use a heavy duty toplink bracket and a heavy duty toplink pin. If its a 3pt setup the you definatlt neede the bracket and pin. The bracket is bigger and spreads the load over a larger area.

On my subframe it bolts all the way around the axle housing and up to the loader frame. This creates another full frame under the tractor. The BH connects to the subframe with a 4pt connection. If somewere to break it would be the subframe or the axle housing itself.

Had a Kubota L4610 with a Woods 9000 backhoe subframe combo,that unit used a factory(Woods)top link. A friend of mine has a "B" series Kubota with a Woods 7500,that unit also has top link.

I have a Woods 7500 and Woods subframe on a Kubota B7800. In addition to the subrame mounts (to a front bracket under the engine and to the lower arm pins) it also has a heavy duty toplink mount. I have put a fair amount of time on it with no trouble or damage to anything. However, a BH can generate some pretty strong forces and the possibility of tractor damage doesn't surprise me.

How did it happen? Some specifics would be helpful.

Ok, so you guys have a completely different subframe setup than I have.

You must have the newer style of mounting subframe - lucky you!! Just talked with the Woods CSR - he advised not to suspend the entire tractor by lifting the front of tractor off ground with the loader bucket, only use the stablizers on BH and only rest the loader bucket on the ground. The top link should never be tightly adjusted, should be able to pull pin out of top link while the BH is not supported.

kphil: Now that you mention it, I think that the order in which I connect things is (1) connect 3ph hydraulic pump so outrigger arms can be used to raise BH to proper level, (2) connect lower 3ph arm pins and locking mechanism, (3) front of subframe to bracket under engine and, finally (4) heavy duty toplink to tractor.

I definitely agree that you don't want to toplink supporting the BH before the subframe is firmly anchored to the tractor chassis, both at the front and back of the subframe.

Woods has two styles fo subframes. The old style subframe that the entire frame stayed with the backhoe, and the new 4 point subframe that has a tractor half and a backhoe half. Some of their really old subframes also had a 3 point link to help support the backhoe.

Ask to see of there is a heavy duty tractor top link bracket available for your unit.

You might want to also see if there is a 4 point mount available for your tractor.

The new 4pt. subframe will not fit the older ('02) model 7500 hoe. Woods is now making a newer version of the 7500 that incorporates the 4pt subframe and does not have a top link to worry about. I am to the point that I am sorry I purchased the Woods brand due to lack of customer support. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Wish I had bought the Kubota brand.

Phil - I'm truly surprised with your lack of support from Wood's. I've worked with them previously trying to get a sub frame mount for my Mahindra 4500 and they worked with me enthusiastically and to my complete satisfaction. Personally, I would try every avenue to find the right department to assist you. Kubota has too big of a following for Woods to ignore any and all problems. I don't think that you might expect them to retrofit your unit however without any cost to you. Not certain what problems you might be having with your present setup except that you tore off the top link nor what your expectations might be of Woods. Kubota obviously doesn't think it is their problem either. Not taking anyone's side but a top link should be designed/engineered to do it's job. Is this Woods problem or Kubota's? I have a woods BH7500 on my ford 1520 and it doesn't have a top link connection. My subframe anchors to my Front loader mounts with one long quick release pin, and two pin supports on the rear transmission housing that hold the three point hitch links in a quick release configuration. Unhook pins and hoses, block up hoe and drive forward. No problems with mine. Easy on and off.

My local Kubota dealer has sold dozens of the Woods 7500 hoes mounted with the newer 4-pt subframe, mostly on the LXX30 Kubotas. The connection to the hoe is the same as the older subframe, except for sometimes the older subframe uses a beefed up toplink too

I have not seen the new Woods hoes (BH80X), but the brochures show them using what looks like the same 4-pt subframes. I will try to attach a photo of this very hefty
$1000 subframe.

The photos of the toplink pullout failures I have seen do not look avoidable with heftier toplink brackets because there don't seem to be any more mounting holes to hold on to. The castings of some tractors just can't seem to take the sudden tension.

Your picture shows the same subframe as mine. Have you ever not used the top link while operating? The factory csr told me to just not use the top link and I haven't had a chance to remount the hoe since the conversation, wet weather has set in here. I talked with other equipment sales and service people in the area about the damage and all seem to not want to tell me much. However, a Kubota parts guy urged me to get a beefed-up top link mount that is part of a Kubota BH mouting system for the tractor. This part is available from any Kubota dealer for about $400. The Woods factory issue is not dead yet, let's hope they come thru!!

Are you sure about that? I have an older model 7500 backhoe. I bought it used from a rental place about two years ago. It was several years old when I bought it. It was originally set up for a 3 Pt hitch mount. Converting to the 4 pt hitch subframe was just a matter of unbolting some parts from the backhoe and bolting on new ones to fit the new 4 pt hitch. Nothing was custom made... all were stock parts from Woods.

I know the older Woods model 750 backhoe will not fit the new subframe.
