Wood\'s RD6000 RFM [w/3 hours use] trade in value?

Hi,

I got the Woods RD6000, 60" RFM as part of a package when I bought my tractor last July.

It was dry and I don't think I used it more than 3 hours, perhaps five, but I doubt five.

Anyone know what it might be worth, as far as trade in value towards the purchase of a second new tractor from the same dealer?

I am not sure what I actually paid for it as it was part of a package. I think I figured it to be worth about $1,800 at the time. It has a chain guard on the back discharge. I don't know if they are standard or an extra. I think probably standard. The mower has been under cover [I built a little roof over it to keep the rain and snow off it...] since last fall.

I would like to think I could get $1,200 for it from the dealer in real dollars when all the smoke cleared. Is this a reasonable expectation? I really don't have a clue...

Henro:

Don't know much about "new" used implements specifically, but, IF (big if) the thing actually sells for $1.8k (actual sale price) new, I would think you should be able to get $1.2k (or maybe a bit better) trading for something else from the same dealer that sold it to you.

I can say from experience, that the typical case for used implements at farm auctions (have been to a number in recent years) that are in good working condition (certainly nowhere near new) is around 40%-50% of the actual cash price for a new one (assuming knowledgable buyers, etc.). If your implement actually sells for $1.8k new (actual cash price) it would go at an auction (under typical conditions) for around $.7k - $.9k. So an actual trade value like new of $1.2k seems in the ball park. Also, what is the "warranty" issue (if any). If there is some and if it is transferrable that should add a bit as well.

Hello Henro--Keep in mind the dealer can purchase new machines at the $1200 (dealer wholesale cost with warranty) and will probably only want $800-$900 in your machine then he can resell it for $1200--Will be interesting to watch--Keep us posted??--Ken Sweet

I would think $1200 would be a good price for it retail, but on trade, you'll most likely get around $8-900 as Ken said. IF they gave you $1200 for it, you'll just find that the $400 difference got built into the new unit somewhere.

I guess I will just have to try to find out the real price the dealer would give me for the rfm, and if it is not worth it, seeing that I paid probably 1,800 for it last summer, then perhaps I'll just keep it and try to sell it myself.

Would be a great buy for someone who wanted it. Have to see what the dealer says...

I think my dealer will give me an honest answer. I Will let everyone know...

Heck, maybe I could trade it to him for a woods 5 foot brush hog? I want to buy one of them anyway...and that is the brand he stocks.

Why don't you try to retail it yourself? I know it can be a PITA, but it can be worth a few hundred dollars to you from what I've read here.

Get a price on trading it from your dealer first. Not a guess but a firm commitment he'll stand by for thirty days. He may want to give you a number for now and another for thirty days down the road, but this time of year he shouldn't need to do so.

In either event, that should be your basis on which you'll base your efforts to retail it. If he'll give you $1,000, then that's your 'break even' point on selling it vs. trading it.

One other thing to keep in mind is how your state handles sales tax if you're not exempt. In Indiana, for example, on a vehicle purchase, you only pay sales tax on the difference you pay when there's a trade-in involved. Here, for example, a $1,000 car traded in on one priced at $2,500 would result in only the $1,500 difference being taxable.

Here, the sales tax is now 6% so you'd pay $1,500 plus $90 sales tax. Buying without the trade would result in an expenditure of $2,500 plus $150 sales tax. That $60 difference in sales tax is one incentive to trade rather than sell outright here.

In the example above, that difference means your 'break even' point becomes $1,060 instead of just the $1,000 the dealer offers you.

Thanks for the advice. I am going to head up to my dealers shortly.

I'm still wondering what approach to take with the kid who is the manager of the Kubota store. The boss owns two dealerships, blue and orange, but hangs out at the blue shop mostly. Both are good guys.

They know I bought the B2910 from them, and I bet they believe like I do that I don't really NEED a BX.

It would seem reasonable to me...but I probably an odd bird...that they might be willing to do something slightly radical in order to sell a tractor they would otherwise not sell this year.

My thinking is if I were to buy a BX, on the condition that they would trade me a 5' Woods rotary cutter with slip clutch and chain guards [$1,200 sale price if I bought that alone], I would buy the bx.

I know their price for the BX2200 should be around $10,000 or a little less, including a 60 inch MMM. I had asked the manager the last time I was up there how the pricing was for the 1500, 1800, 2200.

My thoughts are that they [as Ken indicated above] that they would probably have about $800 tied up in a rotary mower like I want. A trade would mean they were actually buying my RFM for about $800. But I would be getting, in reality, what I would pay for the rotary cutter, about $1,200 plus tax...real money that would stay in my pocket.

The incentive the dealer would have to do this kind of deal would be the profit he would make on the BX sale, and having one more tractor to add to his sales total for the month/year.

If I were a dealer and I thought I could sell another tractor by giving someone [who otherwise would not buy one anywhere] a fair deal on a mower...I think I might be interested.

All depends on how much profit they make on the sale of a small tractor like the bx2200...and how open or closed minded they may be to trying some creative thinking to make a sale.

I certainly do not want to cut the dealer's throat or try to squeeze him to the point he won't make any money on a deal. Maybe I am doing that [thinking like I am] and don't realize it. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Well, I went to two Kubota dealers, the one I like and the one I don't like. That was the way I felt last year and it stays the same.

My dealer said if he sold the Woods RFM I have new today, it would go for something like $1,950. He called his boss and the boss said they would give me $1,200 for it towards either a MMM for the B2910 or the BX2200/mmm. My call.

So now I will sleep on it and make a decision tomorrow. I am sure it is going...just not completely sure which will come back to replace it.

That number equates to a break even private sale of $1,272, when the tax savings is figured in like Gary said.

I did not ask the other dealer I stopped at what he would give me for it in trade, because his bx2200 price was higher than my dealer, and also because he did not sell Woods equipment. I did talk to the parts guy there and he told me to count on losing about 30% on an implement bought and then sold during the first year. That would put my dealers offer right in the ball park.

Guess I'll sing that song by Meatloaf the rest of the day. For get the name, but it goes something like this:

I'd think if he's giving you $1200 and you're in a state wherein you'll save another $72 in sales tax that's not too bad of a deal. Of course, if you can sell it for $1500 that's like finding $200 on the curb, too.
