I've only ever seen a couple of those, but never around here. I always thought that system was more labor intensive and expensive than just plopping them on TOFC cars.

Those trailers would have to be awfully heavy with the hitch in the front, mounts for the truck in the back and the strength to withstand the drawbar pull.
I can't recall the numbers from my carman days, :( but the torque couplers and the cars center-sills endure might be 1 million pounds. That's the force to pull and stop in emergency. Now we add all that stress to a trucks trailer you sure would need to add plenty of steel to those frames.

Look like East Penn is doing some track maintenance near me.

There’s a pretty worn out looking siding about 1/2 mile down the tracks from where I took that picture. I wonder if it’s time to replace ties or possibly extend it? I have noticed their sidings are always full of cars.
Someone told me they rent track space for spare tank cars for fracking NG, too.

There was a multi engine train coming up I81 last night. Nothing but semi after semi passing me, it seemed like a train.

The South Shore railroad here in town has about a mile of 2-track where their old station used to be. There are almost always a couple hundred cars sitting there in storage. They rent it out.

We drove out to Oklahoma and back last week. From Indy to Tulsa was almost a continuous line of truck traffic. If there's a shortage of drivers, I think I know where they went. o_O
