The Cambria rails and there markings. Ya, a tad rusty. Some of the flanges were just about rusted through. Do note, main line rails are 140lbs today.

Cambria was the largest steel producer in the USA in 1870's. I do love my industrial history.

When I walk the abandoned rail lines I will see piles of steel rail with brush and trees growing up through it. Hard to believe it’s not worth going back to get it. One pile had about 1000 ft of it, not to mention the abandoned rails themselves.

Makes you wonder if the effort outweighs the cost, or, someone just forgot it's there? Anyone know the current price of scrap rail?

Scrap steel is pretty high

One of my uncles used to make doorstops out of a piece of rail and 6 spikes.

He'd take 5 spikes and cut about 2" off the tips.
Then he'd weld 4 of them onto the bottom of a piece of rail, with the heads facing down like legs, and the heads all facing forward like paws.
Then he'd take the last cut spike and weld it onto the front end of the rail, at an angle facing forward, with the head facing up and forward.
Finally, he'd take the last spike, full length, and weld the head onto the back end of the rail, at an angle facing backward with the tip up into the air.

Use your imagination....

Scrap steel is pretty high

How many scrap steel places will take RR steel? I know they won't take it around here. They see it in your truck/trailer, they won't even let you in the yard.
