It looks like a few strategic snips with a pair of bolt cutters would bring the whole thing down!

A similar design was used by the Kinzua Viaduct in PA.

It lasted until 1900 when locomotives became too heavy and it was replaced with a heavier structure:

That one proved no match for mother nature though and it was taken out by a tornado in 2003.

It's now a State Park and worth a visit if you're in the area:

Here's the story:

I was there as a kid. Going back to see it again with the kids this summer (I hope)

Probably go there and head up to Niagara Falls.

From:

...BNSF Railway freight train collided with a herd of two dozen elk just east of Cape Horn Lookout, killing them all upon impact.

Operators sounded a whistle and triggered the train’s emergency response but were not able to stop before striking an estimated 24 to 26 elk, according to the rail company.

They handled it better in the Polar Express:

Here is a great film about Duluth Works Steel Mill built there just after the turn of the century. This is quite the story about the building of this blast furnace and the making of an industry. This mill was torn down and we've been to this site. Of cosure rail roads needed are mentioned over and over again.

Since the topic of the Duluth steel mill was brought up here's a old soo line rail road ore dock located in Ashland WI I believe they loaded higher grade hematite from the gogebic iron range using rail cars to load ships, not surprisingly its still standing but sat idle since the 1960s which is also the time the last iron ore mine in the gogebic iron range closed where higher grade hematite was mined underground. Taconite on the Mesabi range is lower grade iron ore however much cheaper to mine using open pit mining. Railroads definitely were and still are very important shipping iron ore from mines to great lakes ships eventually getting to steel mills on the lower great lakes. Fascinating stuff to learn about for me anyway.

I’m fascinated with those things, too.
