Re: I ECHO your sentiments!

You're absolutely right, Jim. The only problem is that not very many people are interested who's the "better" man right now.

They're interested in preventing this from happining again, and the way to do that is make an unforgettable impression upon the people whose behavior is needing modification. As I said in my post, I don't want to kill them; what I want to do is bomb their society back 100 years by destroying their infrastructure and the symbols of 'civilization' which they hold dear. These people, through the advent of modern conveniences and assistance from other countries, have WAAAAAAAAY to much time on their hands, and they use it to stew about how evil Western countries are and how to inflict pain upon us. If they're occupied about 16 hours per day just finding food and water, the scenes of angry mobs throwing rocks and burning US flags will decrease dramatically, this I will assure you.

It goes something like the line from Cool Hand Luke, where the warden says, "Now, Luke........we gonna get yo' mind right".

Re: I ECHO your sentiments!

As we sit here and discuss the finer points of what is and is not permissible in retaliation our enemy is plotting their next move. Apparently the primary goal of our enemy IS to kill large numbers of civilians. 6 to 18 months from now (assuming our retaliation is unsuccessful) we will see another HUGE tragedy. As far as I'm concerned, flying jets ladened with 200,000 lbs of jet fuel into skyscrapers are weapons of mass destruction. Think of the people with no choice but to burn to death or jump 1300 feet to their deaths. That bothers our enemy not at all. Think of women and children, tourists on the observation deck, screaming in horror as the flames engulf them. No place to run, no place to hide, no way to save the ones you love. Our enemy does not care at all for our morals.

I do not advocate killing civilians. But if targets exist of military value then use whatever weapon is necessary to complete the job. Use the weapon that SAVES the most American lives. This is war, we have no choice.

Re: I ECHO your sentiments!

Those 8 year old palensitians you saw dancing in joy on TV the other night because 20000 or 30000 americans died, are the same ones that 10 years from now will be trying to destroy this country. Kill the terrorists, kill their families, kill their children and kill the grandchildren...take out the entire gene pool.

Take out only the leaders and 50 more people will be in line to take their place the next day.

War is hell. It always has been and always will be.

I agree....nuke 'em all! Heck we've probably got a few old ICBMs that have been just sitting in silos for years that will have to be dismantled at taxpayer expense anyway....

Re: I ECHO your sentiments!

I still regret the day we didn't finish Iraq's ability to make war. I am a big supporter of George Bush (Sr), but wish he hadn't pulled the plug on that when we could have eliminated one of the biggest cogs in the wheel of terrorism. As it is, we pretty have to start over with them, and the prospect of taking on Iraq, Iran, Lybia, Syria, Afghanistan, and maybe even Egypt will be much more difficult if Iraq had already been neutralized.

We should start with the ones who supported this attack and those who harbor them. But don't stop there. Its time to quit playing footsie with these people and allowing Russia and Socialist France to dictate how we defend ourselves.

Knight9,

A few points:
1) This concept of applying the law to a war crime like this is BS. These people have an occasional win because a bunch of pin heads want to "take the high moral ground". This totally cripples the good guys from taking the required action. These nuts understand violence and nothing else.
2) Torture is total unnecessary, since its real hard to be a martyr if your already dead, or your world has been carpet bombed into the stone age. Now I am not indicting a whole culture because there is no need to do so, and we should all be careful. Most folks all over the world are not evil. A few bad apples are the problem (example: OK city). We need to take a few days and make sure that we have properly identified the enemy. Which it sounds like are a few radical nuts that hide behind a beautiful culture and religion.
3) The key is to spend significant time and energy to track these folks down and eliminate them. To date we have not really tried because of all the rules. Did you know that the CIA is not allowed to hire "criminals". Where would a good detecive be if he/she could not work with informants, most of which are not saints?
4) Our goverment is not allowed to kill people? If a man breaks into your home and tries to rape and kill your wife, you just stand and watch? This is folly.
5) If you had a person on each plane with a legal handgun the problem could have been solved with a few rounds.

It is now time to say the hell with the rules the gloves come off. We need to fight back.
If need be we need to also say the hell with our "allies". After all if we decide to take action which country would even attempt to stop us? Which country would blame us? The answer is that those that oppose us are not our allies after all and should be exposed as such. In addition, we are the most powerful military in the world. No one could stop us if they wanted to.

While its good to be liked, the second best thing is to be feared.

Fred

P.S. Call me a Hawk if you wish but, like many of you, I am very angry about this. I will be writting a letter to my represenatives demanding an extreme response to this act of war. I hope you all will join me.

Deterrent, eh? I remember reading a story years ago. I probably don’t have all the facts straight but the gist is accurate. If you remember, the Soviets didn’t have too many problems with their diplomats and people being kidnapped in Iran, Lebanon, etc. I always attributed that to the Soviets being behind it. Well, from what I read, the real reason was that the one time somebody did decide to kidnap a few diplomats the KGB “educated” them about the error of their ways. I guess the KGB found out who did it and then paid a visit to their villages and castrated their sons. Problem solved! Drastic, you say? That’s the kind of language those people understand! Bombing them back to the stone age won’t work, hell, that’s where they want to be!

Gentlemen,
This was an unprecedented inhuman act committed against the US and humanity. All of you calling for a full bore, all out assault on the perpetrators are right but let's take it another, needed step. Now is the time for civilized nations to join together and eradicate terrorism like the noxious weed it is. We need to call in the favors of countries who owe us, like say Kuwait who would be an Iraqi province if not for our past help. Saudia Arabia, the other moderate Middle East countries, post WWII Europe (remember the Marshall Plan?, yes even France), South Korea, our trading partners in Central, South America, Japan, South East Asia, the far east and Africa and of course, our friends Great Britain, Australia, Canada need to join together. Any country that's not so naive to think that someone like this couldn't happen to their capital needs to join. Anyone not joining this committment against terrorism gets cut off financially from the rest. Go it on your own.
Many have already pledged their support to the US but what really needs to be done? A reckoning for those responsible in any way for this attack and an ongoing, proactive and active elimination of terrorists and terroristic threats. This is civilization we're talking about preserving. Anything short of this will not be enough.

Re: I ECHO your sentiments!

On the news last night, they said that the main reason these people hate us is that we defiled sacred soil. We apparently did this by stepping into the Gulf War. The children are being taught this garbage and raised with this hate, so that they will be the next wave of good little soldiers.

I find it difficult to believe that a terrorist group, no matter how rich, would have the resources to pull something like this off without the support of a Government. Somewhere, there is infrastructure. There are people available to work on a number of different problems. How else do you know what "kind" of plane is required to bring down the towers? How much fuel? Where to hit? Then, train the people, sneak them into this country, support them while they are here. These people aren't just being sheltered. They are being AIDED. Technical assistance from engineers, architects, pilots, explosives experts, commandos, etc. You don't do that from a couple of tents in the back country. This is Government sponsored.

> Now is the time for civilized nations to join together and eradicate terrorism like the noxious weed it is.

The sad truth is that you will never eliminate terrorism... These people are cold, calculated religeous zellots (read "motivated to the extreme"). The only hope we have is to make these groups toxic to the countries that are harboring them and supporting/sponsoring them. This will make it more difficult for them to organize, plan, and act in such a large scale manner. What you'll end up with is fewer, smaller, and less well organized acts of terrorsim which hopefully will be easier to catch. It was quite obvious to me that these folks had the events of Tuesday AM choreograhed to the last detail, they had the financing/resources and, (as another mentioned earlier) the balls to pull it off. You won't stop folks like this, but you can make it so others will think twice about helping them, and you can make it difficult for them to get organized.

We need to become much more security conscious and, although others may not agree, I think we need to throw out the rule book this time... I'm not sure what the steps should be, but we need to take steps to convince folks that the US is not the place to become a martyr for their cause.
