Would you buy a Roto tiller with Forward and Reverse rotation?

I've heard that those are a direct copy of a King Kutter and that the same company makes them for Kodiak and some other US distributors. I've heard from dealers that they're shipped to the distributors in the same steel crates like they come off the boat.

If I was in the market for one, I'd definitely want the reversing feature. I don't see it as an actual tilling benefit, but reverse sure makes cleaning clogged tines easier.

I kept looking at the picture trying to see the transmission to change rotation with. Then realized you had to flip the gear box to change rotation. Since I have a kingcutter, which is a very good tiller by the way, I am going to go look and see if flipping the gear box will change the rotation on it.

If iread the instructions correctly to changerotation direction you have to remove the gear box and then switch the tines. How long would this process take one the bolts are covered with dirt, mud, vines, etc.

Great idea but makes me wonder about the true value in real life conditions.

Most buyers would set it up for forward or reverse, when they buy it and leave it that way forever or until a different field condition arises. They are not designed to change out ever other day, just to have as a option. Ken Sweet

Ah, well then that model would be useless to me. I borrowed one a while back that could be reversed "on the fly" so to speak. I thought that's what we were dealing with here - my bad

Tines sharpened on both sides? Looks like the tine sweep angle would be correct one way and not the other. Do you remember the brand you were using? Ken Sweet

I will not own a forward rotation tiller. We converted ours to reverse, best money spent. Oou soils are clay based, so the reverse does a better job.

No sorry, it was a borrowed machine. I cannot say with confidence that the tines were sharpened on both sides, but I don't see why not. Nevertheless, I didn't till in both directions. I just used reverse to clean accumulation off the tines.

Far as me personally no I would only buy a forward or reverse rotation tiller and leave it at that.

I happen to like forward rotation and I cant see myself ever needing a dual purpose tiller or me taking the time to switch one around and back etc but thats me.

It may have added value as far as resale but that still wouldn't influence me to buy one unless it was only a matter of shifting a gear shift lever then maybe just maybe.

I'm confused. You don't like forward rotation so you changed yours to reverse but forward does better in your soil. ??????

In my limited experience having tried both in my clay/rock soils I chose forward. It kicks the rocks and clay clumps rearward so I can pick up before the next pass. The reverse rotation kept throwing rocks,dust towards the rear of my tractor, only to get hit again - I got tired of stopping to kick rocks out of the way.
Just my 02 on what worked for me.

A typo at work, fixed it. Reverse does a better job. After having both, no more forward for me.

wouldn't it be better to use a dual-input-shaft gearbox, then you could reversed by putting the shaft on the other end of the gearbox, then moving the 3pt frame and the rear "flap" to the opposite side? Seems easier than switching all of the tines around.
