eBay/Craigslist wow- ****** out there

I find it really offensive when I am selling something and someone offers me substantially less than I am asking..you have to go by the body language that goes along with it..I just say " Forget about it " and I walk away when that happens....It is insulting...I especially dislike the ones that offer you less over the phone before they come and even see what you are selling.

If you get insulted and walk away, you may have just missed a sale. When I sold my last tractor, a guy came to look and then told me a dealer had offered to sell him a new one for less than I was asking for the used one. Instead of ending the conversation, I just asked, "Where is this dealer. I'll take 2 of them at that price." I think he realized how silly his comment had been, and he bought my tractor. If they offer less over the phone before coming, maybe they have a limit on what they'll spend, so it saves you and them time if they don't come look first.

When I am buying/selling something, I always assume one thing above all else... sellers/buyers are liars.

I've dealt with dumb**** buyers and sellers on CL. And I've had some great deals too.

When I was looking to buy a used tractor about a year ago I called and spoke to a lady about 120 miles away, got photos and gave her a time that I would be there the next day. Next day I hooked up the trailer and started out. I was going to call before I left the area just to be sure it was still there and she knew that. I called and called and left messages as I was going and she finally called back when I was about 60 miles out... to tell me that they had changed their mind.
I bought a Craftsman rider in perfect shape except for a blown engine and paid a little more than I wanted. I finally decided to not repower it and put an add back on CL to sell it for the same amount or trade for guns, etc. I figured that I was going to loose but I was offered a double barrel that was worth almost twice what I was asking. Yeah, I took it!

Well, I don't go quite that far, but maybe close. Before I bought my first Kubota, the B7100, I had visited 4 different dealers looking at what they had and asking questions. One of the dealers wanted to buy my motorhome and wanted me to sell it way too cheap. And he said he'd sell me the B7100 at his cost. When I asked how much that would be, it was higher than any of the other 3 dealers I'd talked to. I guess those other 3 dealers must have all been selling at a loss.:D

I sometimes do so price haggling, whether buying or selling, but most of the time I don't really care to do that. Once I made up my mind that I wanted a B7100 with FEL and knew exactly what I wanted, I simply called each of the dealers, told them exactly what I wanted and asked what was the best deal they could give me; no haggling, no discussion. I just bought from the one who gave me the best price. He also happened to be in the best location if I needed anything else.

When I was set to order the only new car I have ever bought... I knew exactly what I wanted and how much I was willing to pay... to make me a buyer.

There are 5 dealers withing a 20 mile radius and I called each of them, asked for their European Delivery guy and then faxed over my configuration and the price that would make me a buyer...

One acted like I was trying to steel the food from his table... another couldn't be bothered, two more told me they could have me in the car tonight and picking it up in Europe take months to schedule... they also wanted a lot more.

The fifth Dealership called me to let me know he had received my Fax and said he had two appointments and asked if he could call me back in two hours... I said that would be fine, expecting not to hear back.

Two hours later he calls, we discuss my Fax and the time frame and said he can do it with a deposit on my credit card... The transaction was exactly as planned... no surprises and the least effort...

I sent him several customers a year after that because he is honest and will give you a yes or no and not waste your time... IF you know exactly what you want.

Even in new cars in the same region... the price can vary by thousands... I save $7,000 in my purchase and the car was built exactly the way I wanted and it was lots of fun picking it up at the factory and driving the Autobahn...

Like the other poster said... I would be a buyer at this price...

You took "talk" as an inexpensive form of communication, not a punch in the gut.

I did a miniature version of that. I though about my desire for a VW diesel truck, and my upcoming vacation, and went on Ebay to find trucks from anywhere in the US, instead of near home. I saw the one I wanted, and called the guy, convinced him I was a man of my word, he convinced me he was too, and that the truck would surely get me home. He held it for 3 weeks, picked me up at the airport, and launched me on my 1 week tour of the everything between St. Louis and home.

I think I am going to adopt that phrase "I would be a buyer at this price." You are the second to suggest it, it says what I say in many more words, but very cleanly.

Often it's not so much what is said... but, how it is said.

I always try to be very Diplomatic when I have my Lemon Law Arbitrator's had on and will give a lot of leeway to making sure each party is heard... don't want anyone to leave with the impression they didn't have enough time to state their case...

Even my new car buying experience shows "Professionals" vary in their ability or desire to listen to what a buyer has in mind.

As Bird pointed out... sometimes all that is needed to make a looker a buyer is a little education...

About the only people I have little use for are those individuals where their word is meaningless... if you ask me to wait for you... show up on time. If we agree on terms... honor them... etc.

Yep, in my lifetime I've been responsible for hiring some people and for dealing with vendors. And if a job applicant showed up late for an interview, or a salesman had an appointment and showed up late, they were just wasting their time.
