for sure you know more about this than I do, but normally I can raise/lower and curl/uncurl the bucket "at the same time" ...and, with the third function WRLong valve setup, I could do all 3 functions "at the same time"--that is I could be raising, uncurling, and opening in one smooth fluid motion, for example.

guessing the solenoid fried...will retrieve part tomorrow from tractor hospital; and try to determine in what position it failed.

not sure I understand "manual control on the solenoid" ...to operate, I had a momentary contact, double-throw-center-off switch at my thumb on the loader control

I would like to find out more about the specifics of your problem. Could you please give me a call. I'll be happy to go over with you how the system suppose to work and help determine what needs to be done to get you back in operation. We have thousands of these valve kits in operation and I just checked and we have sold less that 10 solenoids this year and it appears that 3 of them were for dealer stock.

I look forward to hearing from you

Thank You

had WRLong electric third function that was installed along w my grapple. it failed, and I found myself unable to raise/lower the bucket (except through some trickery) and none of my rear remotes worked (including my T&T, and it's not easy to disengage an implement if you can't adjust the top link).

The WRLong valve is expensive to replace/repair and my work-around was to mount long hoses back to my rear remotes ...(I have 6, so I can plug into any convenient, unused one).

I had not read about such failures, but when it happened, I learned of other such failures and have to conclude it is/was not as robust as a normal spool control.

Indeed, I will call tomorrow ...that said, my guess is I fried the solenoid using my tree shear, not the grapple ...but thnx for taking an interest; I will call after I retrieve the failed valve.

I was just about to suggest to call Nelson and what do ya know! :D

I've ranted and raved about WR LONG customer service in the past and this just proves the fact that they are a top notch outfit.

Do you have any links or info on your tree shear? I'm curious about one for my tractor. I'd be interested to hear a little about it. Good luck with the valve deal.

I'll interact w. Nelson Long offline;

As for the tree shear, I believe it is the 12", probably from Berlon: Tree Shears

Does what it's supposed to w. small saplings; quite heavy and takes a lot of hydraulic juice to work right ...I have it on a tractor, not a skidsteer, so visibility is a bit of a problem...in general I can handle same size saplings with my 'bush hog". I have found, depending on the root system, that if I engage the sapling at ground level I can use the curl to uproot.

If you decide to get one, think about what you'll do with the saplings you've cut down and how you'll handle the stumps.

If you're near the WV eastern panhandle, you could try it out ...and, it might be for sale because I use it so infrequently.

you can PM me if you want more info, or we could continue this thread (or, you might wish to start a new one, since we are in the hydraulics forum and won't necessarily get the right readership)

Hi Joel,
Thanks for the info, I did send you a quick PM on the tree shear, but have a couple general questions.

I looked at the specs real quick and it looks like my tractor has the minimum (barely) amount of flow required. I was wondering how large of a softwood tree you think it would cut? I have a lot of pines and spruce in different areas that I'd like to clear.

Also, do you think it could be adapted for use on the 3pt hitch? I'd like to own a shear someday even if it means renting a skidsteer when needed, the shears are hard to come by but the skidsteers are plentiful.

Have you used it on many trees larger than the saplings you mentioned?

talked w Nelson Long by phone and he provided some very useful suggestions...I may attempt some exploratory surgery based on his comments.

Nice to do business with a company that cares.

Berlon: Tree Shear 12"

It can use up to 5000 psi.

Min 10 GPM

4 in cyl 2 in shaft, 2000 psi = 25,133 lbs force
----------------------5000 psi = 62,834 lbs force

Did you ask WRLong if the solenoid was for continuous use , or intermittent use.

Does the solenoid bulged or swollen caused by heat.

There is heat build up in one of the switch position that applies power.

The other switch position there is no heat build up. This is the default position. The default should be used in the circuit that is used more often. You apply power to use the less used circuit. C2,C3 ports

Read post #4 again, it is sort of what I am thinking.

C1 and C4 ports on the valve are used in the de-energized state.

no obvious distress signs on outside of unit ...will let you know more as I learn more after surgery ...and, yes, solenoid is for continuous duty.
