With R-4 filled tires, have you had any gouging problems on an inclined, sparsely-treed lawn?

Mine are R1s, yes I get some marks. Not bad... The best thing is to take off 4WD when the marking would be worst. The switch is right there where its handy, and you can go in and out on the fly.

If you are concerned about marking, maybe you should consider loading the tires yourself. It is fairly easy, and then you can adjust the levels, put just as much as you need, remove some during wet weather. Just a thought...

I have sat on both tractors (I own a B2910). The 4310 is a bigger tractor than the B7800. Much closer in size to the L3130. The 4310 IMO is a better deal than the economy model B7800.

I have a 7800 and my wife drives it around, doesn't do any work but will drive it around from time to time /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif.
With that being said, I don't think you will have any problems with the heavier Deere marking your yard. I regularly take my 7800 across my yard even when its wet. Just the other day after a hard rain I went across the yard with about 1600 pounds of railroad ties on the carryall on the 3pth. and a bucket full of wet dirt plus the tires are loaded. I would say the gross weight of the tractor was probably close to 5,000 pounds and it didn't mark up the yard at all.
This is a long term investment so a couple of grand may seem like a lot now but it could haunt you down the road. My biggest piece of advice is get what you want. Even though I love my 7800 it sounds like you are leaning towards the Deere but just wanted some justification for the extra $$$$. Go for the Deere and be happy!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

( I looked at the 3130 and it is too big (seems bigger than the 4310). The scariest part of the JD is it weighs 2800 lbs (vs. 1700) and I have a new lawn on an incline with some trees. JD gave me limited assurance that the 4310 is not too heavy. Woe is me! Maybe I could buy both??!

Please keep the comments and advice coming.

I have a NH TC29D that weighs around 2800 and R4 tires. It is a great mowing machine and I use it for finish mowing. I do however have to watch it on wetter days. I just don't mow. Otherwise your ok with that weight on normal ground. My neighbor has a JD 955 with turfs and he is ok also. He just has to watch the wetter days.

The 4310 is a great deal. The Kubota is a smaller lighter machine.
You should be comparing a 3130 to the 4310 pricewise. The 3130 weighs about 400lb more (which is not good for lawns).

If your tasks are small, and you need a lighter machine, get a quote on a 4115 or something in that genre.

Blee,
I gave you my opinion on another thread, but I will reiterate that price and especially dealer were my deciding factors. I know the JD guys haven't been as receptive for my neighbor as the Branson guys have been for me.

Both machines you are looking at (now) are excellent choices. Don't think the Simplicity was going to meet your needs. Where we live - weight = ruts in the yard (when wet). Best of luck! By the way, you will usually question your decision once or twice after you take delivery. I did.

I have a kubota L3010. It's heavy like the JD model your considering. Like thcri, my R4's do fine on my rolling slopes. If it has just rained alot, then I have to wait to mow, but otherwise the weight isn't bad. I've found the addtional weight to be a plus for most of the work I do (bush hogging, box bladeing, trail maint ...). Go for the JD, it'll do a great job for you.

Blee,
I owned a 4300 with FEL &MMM and Kubota B2410 with FEL and RFM. I have a 2 acre slightly hilly parcel. I thought the JD felt a liitle heavy for mowing and that the B2410 as slightly more nimble. For heavier chores the JD felt better. I liked the suspension seat on the deere, 3 range HST, and position control (as opposed to a B7800 1/2 inch control), and detachable bucket on the FEL. Have you considered buying the JD 4310 FEL but instead of the MMM buy a dedicated zero-turn radius mower? I now own A BX23 (no MMM) and Exmark 52" ZTR. The ZTR is good on hills and very maneuverable. It also is less weight and probably cuts better than either tractor you mentioned and less soil compaction. I can ride this ZTR up and over a steep sandmound (septic system) with no problem. It has a foldable ROPS and seatbelt too. The MMM for either brand runs about $2200 and you could put this towards a ZTR which may be in the 6 to $7, 000 range. Also you could delay buying the ZTR until spring ang just get the tractor now for winter duties. If I had more property I would pick the JD 4310 with FEL and ZTR over the B7800 and ZTR. The beauty of the ZTR is no fussing with attaching and removing a MMM from a tractor. The tractor can then always be ready for other chores where a MMM can get in the way.
