Hi All
New to your site and need some help.
I bought a second hand Kubota L2050 4wd and I am really happy with it.
Only thing is that the 4 wheel drive system does not work :-(
I am told that there is a splined coupler shear link thing somewhere in the system to protect the 4wd system, and this is designed to shear when the system is overloaded / abused.
Not aware of the couplings being shear protectors but my brother-in-laws L3000 had both couplings on the drive shaft between the transmission and front axle wear out the splines. These couplings are in no way meant to be overload protection. The problem was wear of the front axle trunnions that allowed the axle to tilt depending on whether going forward or reverse. This was made worse in that my brother-in-law never shifted out of 4wd despite doing most of his work on hard ground. In addition did not provide lube fittings on that model - the 3 Kubotas I have owned all have lube fittings on the trunnions and in my case get greased frequently. This drive shaft is the most frequent failure point in the 4wd system I know of. As this tractor made a noise that appeared to come from the transmission area, we tore that down first only to find that everything looked like it was barely broken in.
Thanks for all the advice and comments!
I was unable so far to locate a downloadable Workshop manual, but I got a Parts Manual, that shows two "couplers" at both ends of the driveshaft.
I assume these are the parts that was referred to.
I will open up there next week and take a look.
Appreciate
Ben
Hello, hope you guys can help. I am trying to find a pdf file of the workshop service manual for a Kubota Grand L4240. Anyone know where this can be found on the Web? I did not have any luck searching with Google. Thank you.

To get an answer to your request it would probably be better to start a new thread with your model number in the title, or rebirth an older thread that has the model number in the title. That will help you get the attention of owners with the same tractor.

I think you will find that you have small diameter front drive shaft with male spines on both ends with female couplings on both ends. The couplings are in no way protective. Likely you will find that the front spline and coupling are shot. The front spline/coupling in my opinion is too small and weak. The front coupling joins to the pinion gear which drives the ring gear. The spline on the pinion gear is not serviceable and you have to buy a new pinion gear and ring gear assembly and you will not like the price. It's a lousy design and a weak point. This will require taking off the front axle and I bet your estimate will be between 2 and 3 K. For a tractor with generally good engineering this is a bad design and unfortunately a common problem on other compact tractors like JD. There are no wheel planetaries on these compact tractors and I only use 4x4 when I absolutely have to. These small loader tractors are not meant to be used like a commercial front end loader or dozer. Another weak point made worse by neglected maintenance are the pivot bushings on the front axle that have zerks front and rear which should be greased FREQUENTLY if you are using the loader. If they wear out you will need a whole new axle housing which is very expensive so grease the heck out of those zerks.
