68 IH Cub Cadet 105 & 2010 Cub Cadet GT2544
Hey all, new to the and a lot of good info on here! I am coming from an 68 IH Cub Cadet 105. Just rebuilt the original engine 2 years ago and she still runs strong. I am looking at the X585 or X595. I was going to go with the 585, but I have read that there is a surging issue with the Kawi motor, any idea if that has been fixed?
What kind of transmission does the JD use? My IH has a hydrostatic and is still going strong. Is the JD transmission reliable?
I have an acre of land to mow, and a 130 foot driveway to clear that is on an incline, needing the 4wd. Plus I want a 4wd unit because its not if you need it it is when you need it.
Now with the 595 and the diesel, with trucks its not good for a diesel to be started and shut down a lot, is this true for the diesels in the tractors? I would imagine a lot of start up and shut downs during the fall clean up months. I will also be using this to move split firewood around a lot.
And finally I know that someone will bring up the 2210 but I really don't have the room for a unit that big.
So my main concern is what kind (manufacturer) of tranny is it and how reliable is it? Will a diesel be okay for what I consider alot of startups? Thank you all for your input.
Shane

Shane,

Welcome to the forum. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif The X's are really nice HD L&G tractors and sound well-suited for your needs. If you mentioned putting a loader on it, I would recommend the 2210/2305 though. As for the transaxle, it is a Kanzaki unit which is known to be a tough unit. You should have no problems with it. I turn on and off my diesel also (I'm on my second Deere diesel tractor) and although it may not be the best way to operate it, I have never had a problem. One thing you might try, is to start an X585 and try engaging the mower at idle; then do the same with an X595. Then you'll have an idea of the torque differences between the two. One other thing to keep in mind, the X won't hold its resale value as well as a 2210/2305 because it is a pricey machine that is situated between the lower lines and sub-CUT's. This may not be a factor for you. I used a 425 for 10+ years and was very happy with it. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

My first venture in a tractor was to get an X585. I have about a 95' driveway to plow and 1.5 acres to mow. Man this is one nice unit. I decided against the diesel, even though I would like a diesel car, due to the fact that I just didn't want to risk the starting issues in the winters. I may not have been completely correct, but we're really happy with the gas version. Either will do you well.

Just one word of caution. You'll need an 18MM socket to pull the blades off of the MMM.

I currently run a X485- and have not had any issues. I have pulled small trees and bushes out of the ground and it never broke a sweat- I mow about 2 acres and pull a small trailer around- very durable unit so far- if I had to find fault I would say that it is a little on the thirsty side- I thought it would run further on a tank but I guess thats the trade off for all the power-

Thanks for the info. If the 2305 was able to have a collection system on it I would jump on it, but it does not look like it can have one on it. I dont like to leave grass clipping behind and it is nice to clean up the leaves with. I guess I will have to try them out and see which I like the best, gas or diesel. As far as resale, I am not worried much as I plan to keep this one a long time.

Shane,

One of the posters here has a Deere MC519 collection system on his 2210. If you do a search, you should be able to find it. BTW, go with the 62C MMM. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I have the X485 (fuel injection) and no problems with the engine at all. I think there was a post on here about such a problem, but think it was specific to one unit, and not general to all the X485's. I had two 445's and both are still running fine too (son's have them). I decided against the diesel only because of the exhaust smell that lingers (IMO) in the garage. I'd like the fuel economy of the diesel, as it is much superior to the ''85's. The transmissions are bullet proof, from my experience and others I know. I mow 8 acres with mine, and it handles it with ease. I've always had the all-wheel-steer and never felt any need for 4wd. It's amazing how that AWS accomodates getting traction when the wheels can turn a bit towards better footing. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Was at the dealer this afternoon, and he told me that JD will have a collection system available for 2210/2305 by spring. JDFAN you’re talking about the post between jdepetri2210 and me about the collection system on he's 2210. He installed a power flow unit on he's 2210 with a bagger for an x-series tractor on he’s 3pt. I was going to do the same thing on my 2210. I ended up getting a model 854 rear pto drive trac vac cheap. Glad I did it‘s a great unit. My father -in-law took the power flow unit I bought and is building a system like the one jdepetri2210 has on he's 2210. Collection system 2210
