The X series tractors have shaft drive to the transmission, and shaft drive to the mower deck, or snowblower. There is a belt that runs from the gearbox to each spindle on the mower deck, like everybody has. The rest of the Deere lineup has belt drive to the hydro transmissions, and belt drive to the decks. LT and L100 series tractors have a single belt from the motor to the deck and spindles,, LX, GT, GX tractors have a primary and secondary belt powering the deck. Deere's repsonse to this system is that the transmission drive belt is only running a hydro pump, no longer turning gears, and therefore the belts are very capable of this, and they talk of 10 yr belt life under normal conditions. Also, we are told that 80% of engine power is actually sent to the deck. (I can't verify that in writing)
Cub has sold against this for years now, but it's still an MTD tractor.
