Not going to respond directly to your Deere comments, but I don't believe a single word of it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have had Deere for many years, and hills, and never have experienced what you said you did. With the 400 series and Xseries, with hydro, and hp in the 20's - never for a lack of power and have room to spare. I could go on, but I won't. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

My neighbors own 200 and 300 series JDs. Some a decade old. But I just retired my Cub 1862 to my flat 6 acres at my office, and that thing is about 11 or 12 years old. Never tried a 400 or X series JD so they might climb the steep slope with minimal grief? Simply don't know. I can tell you for sure, a 200 series died completely and the 300 series couldn't climb and power the mower deck. Believe it or not, that is your choice.

Bob,

I have a old jd314 that does great on hills even working with only a 14hp Kohler. The hill I have is steep enough to side on even when dry. The 314 will loose traction and sit and spin before it boggs or stall /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif . The 314 is shaft drive to the hydro and belt to the deck. I have replaced the hill work with a 2210 in 4wd (3wd /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif) it feels much safer.

Wow, this is beginning to sound like I came onto this thread to bash JD, but in reality I defended the X595 with my initial post, then I later defended Cub Cadet when it was slighted and I simply posted what my experience is with JD on my hillside, just for the record, I actually own several pieces of JD equipment (but not a tractor) and while I do not like my local JD dealer, I do respect the equipment which is why I set the record straight on shaft drives of the X-series units.

But the fact that "tacbat" had his 314 sit and spin on his hill is tacit proof that the JD 300 series is not a hill climber, perhaps my hills are taller and steeper? But while his simply spun its tires, my neighbor's disengaged the deck because it could not power both the deck and the drive. And my Cub did climb the hill while mowing, perhaps because I kept wheel weights and snow chains on my tractor year around to give it more traction?

Bob,

Chains? I do have wheel weights on but chains, I would have never even thought of chains /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif since you have the chains on do you have trouble with the front-end coming up?

Bill

hmm chains /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Many of the old JDs also were shaft drive. My 1984 318 is shaft drive. I've had no problems on any hills. Running out of traction would have nothing to do with belt vs shaft anyway.

FIL's JD 265 (17hp?, belt drive) with bar tires and weights will out pull and out climb my JD318 (turfs) because traction is the issue. But neither one has every bogged on a slope or even hinted at it, mowing or not. I had an OLD IH Cub Cadet shaft drive and I was never impressed by the idea of a belt drive LT or GT - but I have to say the 265 is the energizer bunny. He bought it used, cuts 2-3 acres with it twice a week in season and a ton of other pulling duties (heavy cart) and I don't think the drive belt has ever been replaced. (Deck belts have).

In any case I've only driven the X machines around the dealer when we were looking at mowers. At the cost I can't personally see choosing one over a 2210 or better yet a 4010 but that is one nice lawn tractor. Very sweet.

I have a X595 that I have had for a year now and I really like it. I am impressed every time I mow the grass with it's power, comfort and smooth cut. I had a JD 430 L&G for 18.5 years and I really liked it also but the X595 is a lot better doing the kind of mowing I do.

Oh, I forgot to mention the foam filled tires. All 4 of them. That keeps the weight lower.

As far as the front end coming up, ABSOLUTELY!!!! I said it was a STEEP slope.
