X744 PTO Generator

   / X744 PTO Generator #21
Some years ago I bought a PTO generator on a farm sale . It was the very last thing to sell and it set in a old building it had a nice trailer to . About everyone had walked to there cars to go home it was about four people still at the sale . I bought it for $50.00 and really did not need it . I sold it to a friend for the same price he still uses it today when power is out . Do not remember the size but it makes a 90 horse tractor work a little and runs his hog barn fine .

In THIS case, "some" over kill means it will last longer...

Keeping a generator at 80% or less load will make it run cooler and that = longer lasting, so size accordantly...

I'm still consider things, just in a quandary on which direction to go.

I agree with this ^^^^^
A slightly larger generator won't make a difference in engine loading with the same load applied. Anyone using a generator has to pay attention to the loading and use some judgement. Shopping for a generator whether pto or engine driven in a wider range of sizes may turn up a better selection to choose from.

I have about the same model (x749) engine and mower with rear pto but would rather use my Onan diesel generator and keep the hours off my tractors. Mounted in my service truck I have used it this week for several hours and will use it this morning too. At 5500 watts and 240 volt it is a good size for most of my uses powering tools and domestic water pumps.

In your shoes I suggest looking for a deal in a wider range of sizes from 5,000w to 15,000 w siaes as this may turn up a better choice or selection.

Just make sure you have enough HP for motor starting, assuming you will be starting motor. This is why Winco recommends 2 HP/KW. A motor can be damaged trying to start at low voltage.

Also 2 HP/KW is a conservative rating. There is 748 watts per HP. But more is required due to inefficiency. But 2 HP/KW is conservative.

But don't run it at low (<40%) load for a long time or it may "wet stack". Which is also bad.

There are easy start kits available for starting motors on a generator if that is a critical load you are trying to handle.

The Generac people are faced with this situation all the time with their permanent whole house generator installations.
Air conditioner compressors being a common item in the Southern USA.

You want to identify and have the kit installed before you go and try starting the AC compressor or other motor load and not try it because the "try" may fry it.

The kits consist of specially sized capacitors.

Here is a link to one such products. There are you tube videos.

The RV people have AC starting problems often with the generators in the RV's
