XP Internet Security rogue program

/ XP Internet Security rogue program #21
 My wife just got another rogue program on her computer. She was using Google Chrome and got the XP Internet Security 2010 (virus, worm, trojan, whatever it is).

I'm about to start searching the web to find the best way to remove it.

Has anyone had it yet and found the easiest way to get rid of it?

Been there too I got rid of internet explorer too (even worse culprit) and went with firefox after I got all that bs google chrome crap out of my system.

I went to symantec and if I remember right they had a manual method to delete registry entries etc but thats been almost a year ago something better may well be available now.

That said my problems are 100% gone now with firefox.

Good for you! :)
Moss - You were right about it making you sick about Geek squad and others that say a virus is incurable ..I knew all we had to do was reformat and reinstall XP but the problem was we did not have time to do it...we had to be up and running within the hour so I ran and bought a computer..cheap..I still have the old one and will eventually clean it of viruses.
I am the same as Mossroad, got a few pounds added due to people not watching their computers and what they are downloading then taking it along to those who don't care - other than to sell you a new computer.

I have been using AVG anti virus and Spybot for many years and can honestly say I have avioded all these nasties.
I have to ask if some of you guys don't actually know how to run your anti virus and other safegaurding programs.
Because as I see it, most never even look past the front screen of the program once it is installed. How about going through the preferences and checking out the Help once in a while, so you know and UNDERSTAND how the programs work. It can save you a lot of hassle in the long term.
I don't wish to start a fight here, but from my 27 years in the computer business I find most people don't even check for updates let alone understand how the programs work. They just expect it to protect them.

budgie - You are right but in our case we were running McAffe anti virus and have for years and years and keep it update but the problem was this new virus presents a screen that imitates McAffe's screen or Norton's or whatever anti virus program you are using and it tells you that you have an infection of 40 Trojans and X amount of Worms etc. and has a box for you to click " FIX" If you click that box you are screwed..it downloads all the viruses ..that is what happened to us..so be warned..

yeah- makes me sick too. When I hear my freinds buy a new pc since it was "infected" and they got a sticker shock from quotes from geek quad or simalar companies- they just upped and got a new pc, it kinds feels like a blow to me. I too can help people with pcs but they know I cant get back to them fast enough when thier pc craps out and they wanted it yesterday. Dunno what to tell them- it takes time to deinfect a pc or reload and install preventive measures for them.

radioman....You nailed it...We could not take the time to reformat and reinstall XP...We had to buy a new one...they ought to send these hackers and virus creators to Prison...It is not different than burglary or theft as far as I am concerned..

I don't remember ever having a problem since I started using Firefox that someone recommended here on TBN several years ago.

This guy got his, but as far as I am concerned no where near long enough in prison for the crap he has pulled on us all.

I am aware of the way some of these nasties work, and I take a lot of precautions to avoid such stuff. But a lot of people are so indifferent to the way their programs work. They can protect you, most do a very good job. But in my experience a lot of people just expect the program to protect them once it is installed.
Yesterday was a case in point. The owner of the two computers had not updated his McAfee program or run his Spybot program for more than two months. What chance has he really got?
If he expects old definition tables to do the task it does not happen. It's a risk not worth taking. One has to stay right on top of the AV and other programs and make sure that these nasties don't get past your defences.
It is, as I say to a lot of my customers, like leaving your house door open, with a notice saying come in. They will.
I do feel sorry for all those that get infected. Most times you don't know it for some time and can not trace the bad download or web site you have been to. But when it happens it is often a real pain to clear up.

What I am trying to say to all, is know the programs you are using and keep them and the definition tables up to date.

I use Firefox for browsing on my computer and I will admit that I just set my AV for automatic updates and I have never touched it since and I have had no problems with viruses.

My wife has been using Google Chrome with the same AV that I use but she visits a lot of the social networking sites and I think they are more apt to spread viruses than the sites I visit.

Also, I have learned that when a suspicious pop-up comes on my screen to not simply hit the X in the top right hand corner to close it because many times this just loads the virus instead.
