Tractor
John Deere 790 with loader, LS xr3140h loader and cab,1150 case dozer
After doing just menial tasks with the new XR 3140 it has become clear its time for a tool box to be mounted to the tractor.

I see that avenger has mounted a ammo can in place of the right hand step, someone elts has mounted a smaller '30 cal' ammo can below the rear window on the cab.

Not much room on these smaller tractors for things like a tool box. Just wondering if anybody has found a 'good place' for a place for there tool box on there XR series that I am missing.

Behind the seat and the floor board have been temporarily working, but is not very ideal:D

I did the right hand step replacement as well with an old ammo can.

Either the right step mod or the loader cross tube mod would be the simplest and easiest way for a tool box mod. The cross tube mod would work great for log chain storage too.

Cross tube would be just the place for the longer tools such as a shovel, baseball bat, and the pitch fork also...

A combo of both Ammo can and cross tube a fella could carry almost more than they needed.....

You guys are great! That's got my "idea" brain function firing!!

Do you use a quick hitch? There was a fellow member many years ago that made chain boxes for his quick hitch. Ken's bolt on hooks makes them for the imatch hitch.

If you can fabricate they would not be hard to make. I have a set from Ken as I still use my imatch and that is where I store my chains.

I originally made a bracket that bolted to two threaded holes on the back right side of the cab just above the rear remotes but found the ammo box was always in the way when I needed to plug hoses into those remotes. I then made another bracket and moved the box to the left loader arm about 6" in front of the cab window.

The loader cross tube is a good option. I believe Sidel Ranch has a video on how he did his. I, of course, like the right-step-ammo-can idea. I also bolted on some large D-Rings to the front-end frame, thats where I wrap my chain if I need to bring it with me.

If those locations do not work for you, consider mounting a box to the back frame someplace. That was my other option. I removed the triangle and considered making a box that would work with that bracket.

No real good place for a tool box on these machines. Kinda wish LS would have put some forethought into this.

Another thing you might want to do is place a strong magnet, like a speaker magnet, on the back somewhere. Mine is right below the rear window. This is where I temporarily keep pins while I am hooking and unhooking implements. Really helps out.

No decent toolbox on tractors from the factory has been a problem as long as I have been around, seems like they should at least offer it as an option but they don’t . I might eventually try mounting one in place of the right side step like some others have done but would highly prefer it on the left side where it would be much more handy.

Thanks everyone:thumbsup: I have a couple 50 cal cans, but Somewhere in my 'supplies' I have a smaller 30 cal ammo can option also. I like the behind the cab spot because 9 times out of 10 that's where I am when I need a tool.

On the back of the cab opposite from the triangle, which I removed also, is some handy already threaded bolt holes. I think the ammo can might be the ticket... Wich ever one fits the best.

I don't use a quick hitch. When I needed to use a chain on the 790, I would just wrap the chain for storage around the hooks I welded on the top of the bucket till I got to the project or job.

I use the support tube on the loader as one toolbox.

Here is a video on one I did a while back. I need to update the video because I have changed it a few times to my liking.

An awesome spot on your tractor for a toolbox. DIY at home cheap and easy. Simple and creative. - YouTube

I also like the step replacement on the loader stick side. You can't really use that side anyway to get in. I have been meaning to fabricate something special there.

Looks like a great idea, do you have any updated pics of how it is now?

One thing I was thinking is "I'm lazy I don't want to walk around to the other side of the tractor to be able to pull the tool "tube" out (need to remove the spacer that holds the tube in from one end and pull out the other if I am understanding the design right)" have you found a way to hold it in and just use it from one side?
