Okay, this has been covered a dozen times and I know there are several rules of thumb on how big of implements to use based on the hp of the tractor. I've heard a lot of 5hp per foot of implement statments for about every implement imaginable.
My specific situation is that I have a 45hp 4wd Kubota tractor and am looking to buy some duplicate implements to be able to leave on my property that is 100 miles away instead of having to haul everything back and forth. The #1 implement I would like to purchase and leave down there is a tandem disc.
I currently have an 8' tandem disc that I use with my tractor and it pulls it easily in 4th gear and will generally pull it in 5th gear but if it digs in really deep it will put some strain on the engine.
Looking for used discs I see a lot of 12' pull type tandem discs but not many 3 point type 8' discs. I talked to a guy selling one of the 12' discs and he said he is pulling it with his 35hp 2wd tractor. Seems like a strech to me. The thing is that these 12' pull type discs are everywhere around here and I could probably pick one up pretty cheaply and maybe even justify spending the money on a rear remote to run the hydraulic on it for not much more than I could pick up a good 8' 3 pt disc.
What do you guys think? If I'm pulling the 8' disc at 4mph in 4th gear and pull a 12' disc at 2mph in 2nd gear it would actually take more time to disc the field with the larger disc. If I can pull it in 3rd gear at 3mph it would take the same amount of time. Am I biting off more than my tractor can reasonable chew with a 12' disc?
I'm going to be working just over 20 acres on the new property. Probably will be planting 16 acres in winter wheat and oats as soon as I can pick up a disc.
