We drove to Sydney last week , it's a 650 kilometre trip . I filled with straight Unleaded when we left and just made it to Sydney as the low fuel light came on . On our return i filled with 10% Ethanol blend and had no choice but to fill up again 80 kilometers from home . It's a coastal road all the way so it's nearly flat both ways and there was no noticable head/tailwind . Ethanol has a higher octane but it does not get the mileage , i do'nt know how that works . Someone may be able to explain it ?

There is not a direct correlation between octane rating and BTU content of fuels. The octane rating has more to do with the ignition energy, i.e. starting the burn, while the BTU content determines the energy derived from ignition, and the eventual MPG.

:( Sadly it looks like we hit bottom here and are headed back up. Still $1.75 is a lot better than the high of $4.09 we had here.

Same here, Chris. It got down to $1.329 to $1.359 and now the places I trade are $1.649 and $1.659. I expect them to continue the upward trend.

Diesel has been at 2.49 for weeks. I noticed it had dropped to 2.39 this week. :D

Unfortunately I need fuel this morning and had to use the other station on the other side of the intersection. He was still at 2.49.:(

On the other hand, its the first fill up since 12/17/2008. :D

MPG was low due to short trip driving over the holiday. Its be COLD and its getting colder. I put in JD 0w40 oil in the truck over the holiday. The truck sure starts easy on these cold morning. Friday morning is going to be 15ish. Saturday is 9. NINE! I DONT live in Alaska! Nine is not allowed.:D

I don't remember it ever being this cold here. Where our driveway turn around is located there used to be a big oak tree that was brought down in Fran. I remember cutting that tree up when it was 18. I stripped all the layers I was wearing down to the polypro shirt to cut up the tree. I finished cutting and noticed the steam rising from my shirt.:D Lesson Learned. No matter the temperature, using a chain saw is hot hard work. :D

Heard at the gas station a nearby house had burned down this morning. Guessing it was heating related. Everyone is supposed to have gotten out.

Boy I sure rambled in this one! :D Its the cold.

Later,
Dan

The Fuel crisis will never be over. As long as we're buying and NEED fuel from another Country they have control over us, period.

We had a wake up call in 1974 and didn't do a thing, we also had solar, steam and electric cars in the 20's and never advanced those technologies.

Think about it we have done more in the last five years to advance "hybrids" , just think if we would have been working on this full time since the 20's.

It's simple the Government makes too much money from taxes to ever consider getting rid of oil based fuels.

80 years of sitting on out hands - that's sad.

Amen. And the campaign contributions to Congress also affect what they do and what they don't do.

Interestingly, crude was trading at $37 and some change yesterday...... yet gas has risen .25c / gallon.

I agree with you that the gas crisis will never be over as long as we depend on a foreign country to supply our energy needs. I remember the gas shortage of 1973 to 74, I also remember the shortage threat in the late 70's. We adopted a energy policy to try to get our energy problems under control in the late 1970's but it was scrapped in the early 1980's and the ones that tried to start an energy policy in the late 70's was ridiculed for their efforts and today they are still looked on unfavorable but peoples memory is short and they don't remember why they have an unfavorable opinion of this group just that they do, and that is what I see as sad. I think to try to satisfy our appetite for oil using domestic oil as a means to do so would not be wise either since our oil reserves is finite. To regulate the oil speculation would be a start and to use our reserves as a means to drive down the fuel prices when those that try to raise the price through cutting production. If you deny them of the demand side to be able to raise the prices then you might be able to control the prices. I believe that we need to try to come up with alternative means for our energy needs, I am glad to see that finally it seems as though we might be moving in that direction. It would be good to see our nation come together in a common cause to regain our independence. I remember the excitement in the people especially the children when we decided to start our space program to try to put a man on the moon. This last Christmas many talked about the people cutting back on their expenses and it was noticeable in the big box stores. I know that the merchants didn't like it but one thing that I noticed was that the young people seemed to understand that Christmas was going to be slimmer this year and they seemed to understand and that speaks a great deal in behalf of our children our children are willing to get serious , the question is are we willing?
