$80 in fresh milled Red Oak. Six 4x4x8, six 2x6x8 and two 2x6x12.

Looks nice, and a fair price. What it intended for? Everything I've read says that red oak is prone to rotting, and that white oak is the species you want for anything outdoors.

You are correct. Red oak is normally used for indoors, while white oak is used for either indoors or outdoors with much better rot resistance. Here's a good site that lists the qualities of many woods. Red Oak | The Wood Database - Lumber Identification (Hardwood).

Outside, but the posts will be on concrete piers, so no direct ground contact.

I'm not sure the ground contact is the problem.

@diggin It, Was that your cost to have that Oak sawn from your logs or was that a purchase price?

Hey Brandi, just curious what kind of planer do you have?

Care to share a picture?

I'm not sure the ground contact is the problem.

I pulled a few Red Oak 4x4s out of the ground a few years ago while replacing a neighbor's deck. They were rotted quite a bit but mostly intact. They'd been in the ground well over 30 years, maybe over 40. These will be in two areas where rot won't really matter a great deal, but where they can easily be watched and replaced if necessary. Another 10-15 years I may not be around to care.

Purchase.

You did good. That was 135.6 board feet @60 cents per board foot = $81.36 so it was a very good price.

And these posts are a full 4" by 4", not 3-5/8 or whatever. The only issue if you want to nit pick is that they're rough sawn, so not smooth like store bought and they have some splinters and hairs hanging. I may run a belt sander over them just to knock some of that off.

I'll order another batch in a few weeks and get those in White Oak. They will be installed in a similar application just a few feet from these, so I'll have a comparison between the two species.
