Any idea what 14ft 2 x 4s are good for?

That is oddball, but I have occasionally seen 14' lumber in some sizes (never 2x4 though). If you were closer to me I'd come buy them -- I could use that length for a project.

Sawn into wide boards, those would be very marketable and profitable, even if only slab sawn. A portable bandswaw mill would work and around here there are ads of guys looking for jobs. Look around.
6 Dogs,
Portable sawmill? You mean like this....................... 11-10-19 Cutting Premium Yellow Pine.jpg..........35 hp Yanmar diesel powered Woodmizer sawmill? I have had it a little over two years.

They have all the lengths at the lumber yard my buddy works at all the way to 16 feet..

^^ Most places stock 6, 8, 10, 12 and 16. I never figured out why they skipped 14. Somebody tried to explain it by saying multiples of 4, but that doesn't explain the 6s and 10s.

Sure wished you lived closer. You could be my new BFF. Out here, there are so few trees that no one burns wood and I see uber-wide sawlogs that one one wants. No one has a portable sawmill so logs just lay and rot.

What species are you cutting? Are you just cutting into lumber or making things with it? If you did a thread on the mill and using it, where do I find it? Congratulations on a great mill.

Question for framers or carpenters please.

Im building 2 structures, a simple 1400 sf, 2 bdrm house and 1300 sf garage/shop/apt. All exterior walls are 2 x 6 x 10 ft.

The building supply did the take off.

I now have 97 extra 14 ft 2 x 4s. I can稚 figure out why. During the framing, I had to go back twice for full pallets of 2 x 6s. $$$

Only thing I can think of is who ever did the take off messed up and speced 2x 4s for the top plates?

I知 going to have to deal with the lumber co but, seems to me 14ft is an odd ball length.

Any idea what 14ft 2 x 4s are good for?

On my house and garage builds, the lumber company sent extra length boards for tie backs during the build as in squaring up the walls before installing the trusses. They took back extra, unused lumber for full credit and even picked it up. They don't charge a delivery fee, nor a pick up fee. Jon

6dogs,
I cut anything. Wedding cookies, timbers, shelf boards, dimensional lumber, siding, gonna cut a short log for a customer that will be a huge fish cutting/cleaning board. Odd size lumber is where a portable mill excels. Haven't cut any shingles or ship lap siding yet.

Mostly Red Oak and Yellow Pine. A little Hickory and White Oak. Log home will be ERC walls with Hickory floor with Red or White Oak ceilings over the timber frame trusses.

I have a misc. thread here and have been putting some sawing stuff in it............. https://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/projects/359501-my-place-cat-mahindra-ducks.html

Thx

Still, 97 extra 2x4s, seems like a lot? Besides that, they built the entrance trusses so I had to buy 6 additional LVLs and now re pour the footings. This from a reputable co.

I called the lumber co and that痴 what he said, tie backs etc. initially they told me returns are no problem. Let痴 see. I still have a load of material to buy, sheet rock etc etc.

Almost every time I buy something online, I screw it up, or they do. Between Amazon and Wal mart, they have screwed up 4 of my last 5 orders and it痴 been months trying to reach anyone. Amazon is just miserable. I actually sent a hand written letter, to Seattle, begging them to ask a real person to look into my problem. Letter came back, return to sender, They have mastered the art of taking your money and disappearing.

I recently ordered the top of the line rigid chop/miter saw from HD. I will only buy rigid. Apparently HD is the only retailer for Rigid? I also bought the portable saw stand.

They shipped the stand but have the saw ischeduled for my pick up at the closest store, 1.5 hours 1 way.

The order form was confusing, to me anyway. The more I use online, the less I like it.

Like all things, if it works for you, then you think it痴 great.

I have heard the following statement regularly for 40 years, usually regarding a computer screw up but now regarding Amazon.

Oh, my computer doesn稚 do that! Oh, they never screw up my orders! Good for you.

Sawmill guy down the road quoted me $5 for a Red Oak 2 x 6 x 8. Ordered 6, plus 6 Red Oak 4 x 4 x 8 posts. He's got a pile of logs ready to go, so I should have them in a few days. They'll be rough cut, but that's fine for me. I've got a belt sander if I want to clean them up any.
