Yanmar 187D - 4WD just quit on me

That's a bummer-and very frustrating. I'm sorry.

I remember you tried isolating the problem and noises earlier, and it seemed to be just in the pinion. Did you get the shims back in the same way? Maybe try it with them out, or in, if they're absent.

Are the 187D's front axle parts the same internally as a 186D? You should be able to find the pinion and ring gears.

I hope you can figure something out.

Got to put in my 2 cents worth. Did you put shims and everything back just like they came out? Not being the technical way to do it but hopefully you just felt your gear backlash and shimmed so as to have just a few thousands backlash. Wear and tear could change the amount of shims needed. You definitely have wear and tear.

Did the bearing feel good? I had posted this comment earlier and you didn't respond so I am just reiterating a reason they may be noisy and damaged in that way.

"Not saying it wont work if the back lash and pinion depth are right (as they can be for 20-30 years old) but that may be what blew it up is the pinion climbing over a ring gear tooth for some reason like a bad bearing?. Close inspection should prove that, one tooth on either part of the set should show a slight abnormality."

Good luck!

The final chapter: traded in the Yanmar. Why? She was definitely worth fixing, only 350 hours and no leaks. But, for what I do this was an underpowered machine. The best I could hope for with the repairs (at this point beyond my skills and requiring a repair shop) was to be back at square one. So now I've got a 34 hp tractor and I trust the dealer that took the 'old gal' will fix her and sell her to someone who will get good use out her.

Thanks for the update. What did you end up buying instead? What, if any, further progress did you make. I'd like to see your new machine.

The replacement is a Kubota L3400 HST used but very low hours. As far as the end of the repair thread on the Yanmar, after welding the broken tabs back on and reinstalling the seal and shaft, refilling the housing with new gear oil etc., did a test drive and could feel and hear the pinion gear clattering. Funny, the sound was present in 4wd while driving ahead, not astern. I believe the teeth on the pinion and/or the planetary must be damaged. I scoped out getting a replacement pinion shaft. There may be some out there but probably from a junk yard, and not cheap.
