Best of luck! If it's any consolation, I (and probably others) learned a lot from your experience by reading this thread. It's probably not a consolation, but it's true.

One comment - I suggest torque the head again tomorrow. I've seen head gaskets settle overnight. If this is a replica head gasket (likely) then it might need this.

And thanks for sharing your experience!

We re-torque after 20-30 minutes run time; our experience shows it needs it often enough to make it firm practice. Tractor sits and runs at a nominal idle (perhaps 1500 RPM or so) to warm up.

YIPPPPPEEEEEE
tractor started right up.
went out this am and retourqued head I got about 1/4 turn on the two middle bolts. then finished putting it together. use the compresion release to get oil pres. up then fired it up. it runs fine.
I am still burning some oil and remember all I did was replace the rings and rod bearings and head gasket. my son who helped me who has built quit a few motors told me I should hone or replace linners but I just wanted to see if it was going to run. he said well either the rings will seat and it will stop burning oil or they won't. he said on the cars he and friend have done that if they did not hone the cylinder that if they ever seat nicely it take a couple days.
anyway I'm happy with it for now. And I may go ahead and replace everything at some point if it becomes a problem. but this job was so easy and straight forward I look at it all as part of the learning curve with a tractor.
thanks for all the help!!!!
