Yanmar 2000

I can offer this. There isn't very much lining on the brake shoes new. Only about 1/8 -1/4 of lining.
I had a shop do mine thinking I would get a lot more material. I really shouldn't have had the shoes re lined. I had about the same amount of material after I got them back as I did when I took them in

I got the tractor home Saturday. I have attached a few pics.

I haven't used it much. Everything so far seems to be functional. I'm sure a few (or maybe many) gremlins will surface over time, to be expected with 40 yr old machine.

One thing I discovered so far; you don't just turn the ignition switch off to shut it down. I actually had to go to the manual to get an explanation. Basically it said to slow idle for a couple of minutes then go to full slow idle to shut the engine down. Is that the way you guys do it? From what I see, you made a good buy

   / Yanmar 2000 #24
You did good! The implements make that a -very- reasonable price.

Yes the only engine shutoff is zero throttle. These things are about as simple as a rock. No fuel solenoid, no fuel lift pump (from tank), no glow plugs (just a $15 manifold heater that's simpler to replace than a spark plug), no thermostat, only two cylinders, obviously no computer or exhaust injection system. Same alternator and regulator as early Datsun so these are inexpensive at Autozone. Owner's manual discusses running without battery if you have one battery you carry around and start several rigs with each morning, and it cautions against using dirty ditch water in the radiator. Really, a carpenter's hammer is about the only thing simpler than these early Yanmars. I think its partly because these engines were first developed for tiny Japanese offshore fishing boats where reliability is the only thing that matters.

Condition of your new YM2000 looks about the same as my YM240 when I bought it in 2003. I see washers welded for the front wheel lug nuts (and the paint burned off), somebody ran it too long with the lugs sloppy loose and squeaking and hogged out the holes. My YM240 squeaked as it rolled and I found all the lugs loose, prior owners just didn't care. The good news was a month of tinkering with minor 'deferred maintenance' like replacing the ThermoStart, the unreliable ignition switch, and the clutch safety switch somebody had butchered, got me back to spec and restored flawless reliability. Now I've enjoyed 13 years of troublefree service. I think this is a better record than many tractors bought new.

You're going to love it!

California,

What does the manual say about running without a battery? Any "dos and don'ts"?

Thanks

TNHobbyFarmer,

I have a YM2000 like yours. I agree with California, the simplicity is unreal, and you are going to love it. I mainly pull a 5 foot Caroni finish mower with mine, and I'd rather ride my little Yanmar than a fancy zero turn mower any day. Looks like your finish mower may be a Caroni as well.

Yeah 231 I think I'm going to enjoy the Yanmar. I didnt know the finish mower was a caroni. There was nothing on it to identify the brand. I'll investigate further to make sure.

You did amazing, in the right season that Finish mower is $600 easy, that bush hog in the summer will be $300 to 400 easy and that Box is $150 - 200.

Fuel shutoff sounds normal and that looks like a serviceable original yanmar!!! YOU DID amazing!

Nope just start it up and disconnect it and take battery out, I personally would make sure the positive was inside the rubber shield and make sure it cant hit the frame. But these things just have a contained electrical system and once running with a good alternator they can provide their own power. If the alternator is bad you still will run you just wont have any electrical. Which consists of headlights and warning lights is all.

Good deal! I noticed the old owner has the Thermal Start setup like I have mine. This is all you need to add fuel to it. I just put it in the tank to add fuel to it then Turn the key backwards and give it a small squeeze and you should see it get hot and Blk. Smoke if you remove the Air Cleaner cover. Your need it IMO. in TN. Then since I rarely have to use mine I can squirt it back in the tank or disregard it.... Or call Hoye,Fredricks and get the Thermal setup. I Rarely ever use mine so no need for it. It also looks as if a dirt dobber may have yours clogged up.

California,

Thanks for the info on running without a battery. When the old battery that was on mine when I bought it dies, I may just use a jump pack to get it going and save the money on a new battery. I'm pretty sure I could do the same thing with my little diesel lawn mower.

I was out at mine the other day and checked out a few things getting ready for spring. I checked my battery and I'm going to have to get with Steve@Spalding and ask were he bought my Battery. It's a **** good one!!! In a couple of days I've owned it 9yrs.. When I checked it after sitting since Oct. it still was showing 12.45v. :D

The battery in mine lasted 7 years but It would die if left too long the last 2 without a trickle charger.

I just bought the new live of "value power" battery from Walmart. ITs just a 1 yr free replacement battery but at like $48.88 I had to try it as I have always had good luck with walmart, like 7 + years on batteries

l'm sure I will go to Walmart also and try using a higher CCR. I believe and was surprised the one that's in mine is only 650. Never seen the Manufacturer in Ga. And I bet I'm going to have to go to the other side of Atl. Or Al..:) I lost 2 in 16yrs. In my truck. But I replaced them with a premium brand battery.

I assume thermal start is for cold weather. Correct? I won't be using it much in cold weather so doubt I'll need it.

Exactly, warming the intake manifold helps it start like a nice warm day.

A hair dryer warming the intake side of the head for a few minutes, or blowing into the air filter intake, can do the same thing.

My tractor came with a ......dang I cant remember the name, it was one of those small knock of names you have never heard of. I looked them up online and it was a distributer and maybe manufacturer somewhere in ATL?

My 1500 came with a Vietnamese battery in it that could barely crank it over. Dumped it for an Optima and it's been years of trouble free cranking even without the compression release.

you Probably remember I have a VN tractor as well. They must not ship them here with batteries because mine had a battery from the US when I got mine?

Do you have a bulldog loader or V2/3 loader? The refurb company that my tractor was done by used the Bulldog loaders. As that's what was on it when I bought it, I had them pull it off when I bought it since I didn't want the loader. Now I wish I would of just paid that extra and got the loader but I really didn't need it and didn't want to spend that extra cash
