I brought home a Yanmar 2210 (Shiny as a new penny) which started and ran great for until asked to work. After about 15 minutes of work, (finish mower or bush hog) the engine would overheat and begin to seize. Great quantities of black smoke would pour out the exhaust and no matter if you disengaged the pto or into neutral the engine would seize. Wait 30 seconds and she would start right back up again. I replaced the head gasket but no change. My farmer friend said it looked like it was overfueling so out with the pump and injectors and off to the shop for rebuild. Swapped radiators, checked water pump flow reinstalled pump and injectors and no dice. Same problem. On the way back to the barn the engine started knocking bigtime. Drained the oil pulled the pan and was greeted with a broken crankshaft.

I tore the engine down on the bench and all of the rings on both pistons had endgap clearances of less than .004" and the pistons themselves were smeared where they had overheated. The cylinder liners were marked, but not scratched. Tomorrow I will run a hone through them and see how they look.

Pictures to follow tomorrow.

Do you really think that piston ring endgap could cause a crank to break?

Thanks folks

If they expanded bigger than the bore I'd say yes

End gap for 240 and 330 should be .0118 to .0197". I would think the 2210 should be about the same. .

Did you buy this from an individual or from a dealer or refurbs? I am guessing the first one or else you would have taken it back to them unless it was AS-is.

I hate to hear all this trouble though

New crank maybe hard to come by. I would do a search before I put much time and effort into other stuff

Again, 2210 shares a lot of engine parts with YM2000. It's worth checking to see if that more common crank will fit.

Or if thats impossible, consider putting a YM2000 engine in it.

I would not pay $500 for the crank. Unless you can find a used one, I hate to say it but I would cut my losses and part that thing out today and recoup what you have in it so far...or search for another used one or a parts tractor.

Edit: I was clicking on Hoyes site and saw the pic of their parts tractors. If your set on it, call Aaron and see if they have a used on in a parts tractor that they would sell. He has told me as a rule of thumb the parts are about 50% of new. Now don't hold anyone to that as I think it varies on the part. Say like a fender or a bold or shifter or something I can see being sold for 50% cost but something like the crank that would totally disable a potentially running motor may cost more? I don't know if this is true or not. But I do know the sum total of all the parts is worth more than a tractor sitting there complete and even running but that's just how things go, so maybe they would part out even a good motor or maybe they put good motors on the shelf to sell whole and part out other ones? But then a crank out of a high hour motor would not be worth much if its out of spec and would have to be welded up if no oversize bearings were to be had. Ok enough thinking as I type.

I hate to hear something like this happening to anyone. I agree, call Aaron at Hoye and see if he has a used crank. Or like California suggested, maybe swapping your engine for a 2000. What did you pay for the tractor? Was it as is?

cost involved thus far is a big factor. Patience is another factor. If it didn't cost much to aquire and you have space to store it indefinitely. look for a parts tractor. IMHO. looks like from your signature that you have space for other machines. Just saying.

If you have the ability to do the work and have to put in over a $1000 worth of parts you should come out with dependable machine. Seems to me it would be worth it. Your not going to get much for it as an individual selling it for parts. :2cents:

I hope there is an air cleaner housing that that air intake tube hooks too!! I haven't paid much attention to the 2210 to see if its like the 2000 and has the round filter housing sitting on top of the engine or has a side cleaner option year?
