anytime I have an engine that has been setting.. I pull plugs or in the case of a diesel.. perhaps glow plugs if it has them.. or injectors if not, and then change the oil.. and roll her over by hand. if that one has comp release.. that would work.

change fuel fitlers. bleed her.. service air filter.. etc.

again.. if comp release.. roll her over and get oil pressure.. then drop the compr and fire her up. be ready to shut down fuel and perhaps dump comp if say.. rack is stuck in injector pump and she runs away.. etc..

To expand on what Soundguy posted(and I hope he doesn't get upset with me), Remember where the air intake is..........if a diesel engine ever 'runs away' on you...........Stop the air intake to the engine immediately............use rags, shirts coats.......whatever......................stop the airflow immediately. I can't stress this enough, because it will save your engine.

Starting fluid can cause a 'runaway engine' also...............so be careful if you use it.

Your welcome.

Do not use starting fluid on the little Yanmar. The ring lands on the pistons are not up to the radical cylinder pressures developed by the use of starting fluid.

good points.

i've used heavy rubber mud flap rivited to a metal plate to choke em off before.

In fact.. here at the shop a couple months ago we were working on a dozer with electrical problems and could not get her shut down and we had to choke plate her. :)

That Yanmar in a Mustang did not use a compression release, so following Soundguy's advise pull the glow plugs or injectors to release compression while spinning engine with new oil. If memory is correct, it has a manual fuel shut off so you can leave fuel off when cranking.
