I don't know.
We were pretty heavy into Chenoweth in the late 70's and the 80's. Often cut off their style of roll cage to adapt Porsche, Toyota and even Corvair style powertranes. The single seat Chenoweth with a 356-B engine and transaxle was 1060 lbs w/o driver, but fully fueld. That roll cage was completely redone and passed a very rigorous tech inspection (well.....they all had to). There was a pass or fail strict inspection and no middle ground.

The ONLY time one of our cars, rails failed was because of a Simpson 5 point restraint with a date stamp that was 2 months passed on its expiration rating. Talk about all dressed up and no place to go, that was a terrible weekend.

There didn't seem to be any liability issues as everything was inspected and all vehicles were designed for off road, strip or hill climb competition. Mark

Soundguy, Yes, the ones at the Grey yard were swept back as well. They were 3" square tubing mandrel bent and, IMO were under sized and under engineered to do the job. The overall weight of the upper bar indicated it to be too thin. I had the opportunity to study very closely (was looking for an ISO number) but nothing to indicate origin of manufacture.

Also have seen the retro-fits. Just looks like a good place to start if you re-invent your own platform with front and rear impact supports.

I believe I will try for the canopy and light bar approach. Hope to put one together and put it on the forum for feedback.

Thanks everyone. Some I knew, most I did not and maybe some I didn't want to hear. But as always, TBN members always provide excellent advice.

In the not too distant future I will fabricate a HD canopy / light support and post for your opinions.

The tractor in Hoyes ad appears to be an FX. Attached is a picture of a YM2620D that I had. I have posted this picture before. It shows how stout that ROPS is.

Other than the fiber glass top shattering this was the only damage.

I don't think a 4 post design would work well on the smaller 15 to 20hp tractors but they are VERY stout.

Aaron, is that the original base (axle to first plate) on the rear of the tractor. Is this strong enough for ROP?

I am looking for a ROPS system to install on my 1955 Ford 640 tractor, and you guys seem to be the most knowledgeable on this subject, and have done the most research. I am just starting out on a search for info on this matter. Can any of you recommend where I can look to obtain something to install on my tractor that is in your opinions the "best" possible system for what I have? Any help would be appreciated. I do not have a FEL, only a bushhog and future box blade. I was told on this tractor a FEL is not practical as it is only a 2WD, and I do not have power steering. Thats fine with me, I do not wish to tempt fate by overdoing what I have. But my property has a few slopes, drops etc. I have purchased a tilt meter which I need to install; and while I don't want to get a false sense of security simply because I have a roll cage/bar, I do want the added protection. I still maintain a great sense of respect for Newtons Law. I love this web site!

All the ford tractors from the 1939 9n and up have a retrofit available. it is a certified rops and last I checked was available thru your local NH dealer. ( NH doesn't make them.. but buys them from the manufacturer. ).

The model for the 9n, 2n, 8n, NAA, and most hundred series is the same.

Soundguy....does it look like this? I don't recall where I got this picture but it is an aftermarket ROPS........I have a small collection on my other PC but it is in for repairs and this pix just happened to be on the laptop.

It very well could be. The pic I say was from a right side view.. slightly canted to see some of the drivers seat.. but it had those distinct swept back features... I guess to stop the rear rollover very early before much weight would be on the rops.. etc.
