Yanmar Thermostart

   / Yanmar Thermostart #11
JM3,
I've attached a jpg of a page from my YM1110D parts manual showing the thermostart system. This model has the manual refill reservoir. I also have a YM1301D with the injector return line used to fill it automatically.

Thanks Greg...

But, I didn't notice the heating element in the picture...

When I get to my shop, I'll try to post the current thermostart system being used on Deere without this reservoir ... (actually I think has been used since the 70's, but not positive...)

Attached is a photo that show the filler bottle. You can't actually see the heater element because it is enclosed.

Hi Brent,

The systems look very similar, perhaps the heating element in the Yanmar is very small inside the manifold holder compared to the current system...

I'll try to get a picture on my element (to be installed this week hopefully /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif and compare the two...)

Size would appear to be the main difference... has anyone used their Yanmar thermostart system "dry" without filling the reservoir and what have been the cold starting results...? (or better yet... tried both dry and wet? to compare)

I doubt it would work dry, just not enough heat compared to burning some fuel.

John,
The heating element is labeled 1. in the diagram. It is integral with the valve. If you remove the TS "plug" (1 in the diagram) from the intake manifold, and look at the bottom end, it looks remarkably similar to an automotive cigarette lighter. The part labeled 12. is the wire that connects to the harness for power. The heat generated with the electrical element is not enough to be very effective without burning the fuel, but is more than enough to ignite the fuel.

I saw a YM186D (US model) for sale near me recently, and noticed that it didn't have the thremostart system - at least not the one that uses fuel. I didn't think to look for the type you have described.

At first glance, looking at # 1, it appears to be a modified fuel injector and # 12 looked like some kind of "throttle rod"? /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Now, that you've described the correct parts... it looks like a combination glow plug/fuel injector which indeed is unique... and I have to agree... not enough "umph" (or surface area) just from that glow plug tip to heat up the intake incoming air...

JM3,
Did you just purchase a new one to put on your Deere? I'm just curious what the price would be, as it looks to be a very simple installation which could be done to any of these Yanmars since the engines are pretty much the same.

Yes, I got the "kit" about 2 years ago, but never installed it... I priced out the "element" alone about $69., but the whole retrofit kit was about $72... /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

I'll take some pictures and measurements later...
