I will for sure be putting a slip clutch on it, actually I think I'll have one made that I can use for all my implements.
I made mention in the notes of the video recognition of the tractorbynet forums and cold water tractors for all the help.
Thanks everyone. Now, I just have to keep my fingers crossed that it continues to work.

Is that going the wrong way or is it spinning g so fast it appears to be going backwards?

That's funny - I don't have a tiller but when I watched that video I said to myself "Hmmn I would have thought the tines spun the other way"!

When I got my first Walk Behind Troy Built Workhorse rear tine,(Which has the similar tines) I thought the same way, but no, thats the way they turn.
The Tine style of those King Gutter with the big 90degree bends in them are a lot more aggressive.
Although these Yanmar's do work for our soil tilling needs, they were originally designed for Rice Patty use,
at least the ones that were sent over to the U.S. used from what I can tell.
I tried it in a small 40' long section in one of my smaller gardens that I know was very soft from being tilled every year for the last 7 years, and it did a very nice job of tilling and left behind a nice smooth trail.
I only wish it was a 5' instead of a 4' because my tire path is 5'
P.S. I did order my Clutch Break this morning.

That sounds nice! Congratulations for getting it restored. I'm impressed with the extent of your gardens and crops shown in your YouTube vids.

It seems to me that the tines on a rice tiller need to turn forward (same direction as tires) for a couple of reasons.

* To help propel a 2wd tractor forward while operating in muck. (rice paddy). Like 32-wheel drive. :)

* To avoid burying itself. If it were counter-rotating then (assuming a rice paddy) slicing a mat of rice roots from the bottom up might eventually hit a dense spot and dig in so the tiller couldn't be raised enough to get clear. This could only be resolved by backing the tires into the loose material it just dug. Good luck driving out of that.

* Preventing damage to the tiller: One point I have experienced in my (dry) orchard - The tiller will climb right over big roots it can't slice, without damaging itself or stalling. Its scary to hear it bounce up but it doesn't seem to hurt anything.

As for the shape of the tines - it looks to me that these are optimized for slicing rice roots in muck, in contrast to a US tiller that digs down into dry ground like a shovel. Nevertheless this does a nice job in dry ground. I found it does a good job of clearing blackberry roots. (An old post). Here's a picture from that post showing a small test I made at 540 then 1000 rpm pto setting, with engine at 1600. While the YM240 doesn't need full throttle for the tiller, the little YM186D needs to be at 'pto rpm'. (The YM240 has 24 engine hp with huge torque at low rpm, contrasted to 18 hp with a torque curve like a lawn mower on the YM186D).

Update 8 years later: Still running, I've replaced the tines a couple of times now.
Getting ready to service it today and put it away for the rest of the year.
I need to build a new rear flap for it as the original is so bent up etc.
Probably going to make a flap that can somewhat shape rows this time out.
I really want to thank everyone so very much Again for all the help with resources and input/information.
Hope everyone is doing well in these trying Pandemic times.
It was touch and go there for the last 4 years. We found out my wife had ovarian cancer and I wasn't even sure
we'd still be on this property. I'm totally restructuring the layout of the property/farm, building new greenhouses relocating water lines etc.
It's a lot of work, a lot of investment but I'm going to make this work or die trying. Doing 98% of the work myself so... it's taking time.
Wife is doing well now except for the after effects of Chemo, but she's otherwise doing great.
I'll try to remember to post pictures of the new flap I decide to go with.
Take care, and again, Thanks!

Kevin, We now have the Part Manual for the tiller. See attached.

Compliments of the Yanmar Tractor Owners Group on GroupsIO.

And with the Yandex OCR image to text from Japanese to English, the manual is even better to understand.

I have sold hundreds of those tillers and not a 1 had a broken gear, just bottom bearings from sitting in the water.
You can buy the bearings at Napa they are real common & cheap.
Give it a paint job after the repairs and you will be happier !

Do these tillers use a shear-bolt to prevent gears and bearings from breaking?
