No compression release that I can find. Just warm the glow plugs and turn it over. I did some research and conclude it must come with a gear-reduction starter, that I know will use less amps then a conventional starter. Maybe you can refit the older engines with a gear-reduction starter, I've done it before with an old surplus military truck.

The compression ratio I found on the 4tnv88 spec sheet is 19.1

My curiosity has been touched. I have several manuals and one for a ym276 engine which has a compresson ratio of 20:1. Suppose to have 497-569 compression psi @ 300rpm.

Read a couple of internet conversions on compression ratio to compression psi to use 14.7 as multiplier. Evidently that doesn't work with these Yanmars. 20 X 14.7 = 294. Can you gurus tell us how to convert ratio to psi?

I'd bet a dollar to a donut that 4tnv88 has a pretty high compression psi also.

Hey Winston, I'm actually flying down your way tomorrow, I'm spending Christmas at my brother's in Killeen, TX.

I'm not a diesel expert but I'll ponder your question on the flight down. The only compression figure I can find for the 4tnv88 is 93.8 PSI for "BMEP, Net Power." I'm using martindiesel.com for the spec sheet. http://www.martindiesel.com/products/Engines/4TNV88 SPECIFICATION SHEET.pdf

Also, I'm wondering if there have been some compression design changes over the years due to EPA requirements so these diesels burn a little cleaner. I know that's what killed the Army's LD-465 multifuel engine which has a 22:1 compression ratio.

I put a gear reduction starter spec'd for a later and larger Deere/Yanmar on my YM240 (YM2000). I recommend this. It now cranks frantically fast and fires instantly regardless of starting technique. The more powerful starter was a perfect clone replacement. I only had to add a few inches to the wire that comes down from the key switch.
Cost me $100 (new, no exchange) via ebay.

Here's a post I made back in January with a photo of both starters. I described the high-output starter earlier in that thread, post #26.

As I noted there - this could also be a suitable remedy if compression seems too low for reliable starting. I wouldn't be surprised if this high-output starter, designed for a four cylinder engine, spins this little twin 50% faster than its native starter did when new. As I said, highly recommended.
