JD790 2wd is Transmission driven pto, However the 4WD 790 is continuous Live PTO. This is an updated Yanmar, probably your grandkids will still be using it... 25 PTO HP Basic No frills 4WD tractor like the everready bunny... just keeps on going & going & going.

HP & Size wise, this unit is closer to the JD4300 than the 4100. For $10,600, I think a bargain! (You would think I have stock in this company?)

If you get a chance, go to a dealer and put the 790, 4100, & 4300 side by side. I think you'll be impressed with this 790. The 790 looks like a big bully next to the little 4100.

DarinS, I completely agree with Mr. Miller on the 790. I got my 790 4X4 last fall after looking at all colors shapes and sizes of tractors both new and used. I found the late model low hour used tractors to be almost as expensive as new but without the warranty (in most cases) and the higher hour used tractors were really beat. I wanted a tractor I could use, not work on. After looking at the "economy" offerings of Kubota, Deere and NH I quickly settled in on the 790. I'm very impressed with it's capabilities and quality. I also have a great dealer (Walkers Farm and Garden in Union, MI). Of course you have to be willing to shift as no HST is available. This suited both my wife and I just fine (she's still fuming that you can't get a mini-van in this country with a stick). As mentioned, compare the 790 to a 4100 and a 4300. It's really a good size machine. You won't find the hp of the 790 in anything near that price. And after all, isn't a tractor nothing more than a portable power plant anyway? It's the implements that do all the work.

Thanks again guys. I do like the power on the 790. and size I am fairly new in this tractor stuff. So this is great info. I don't know why the dealer would try to talk me out of the larger tractor but he said it was the pto. was not live. So is that when you put in the clutch the pto will stop? I would like more info on the 790 from you so then I will go look and try one out. Tony Is that price with a loader or without? I will definetly need a loader. Thanks again

Darins, the 790 has what is called a two stage clutch. When you push it in about halfway it disengages the transmission to allow for shifting and changing directions. All the way in also disengages the PTO. This allows you to change directions and/or shift gears while maintaining the momentum of the PTO driven implement. It takes a bit to get used to as my natural tendancy is to push the clutch in all the way every time. It's also a pretty subtle feeling between the two clutch positions. Hope this helps,

The John Deere 790 with 4 wheel drive does have a live PTO . And power steering . I bought mine back in december and really LOVE it. I'm not new to tractors , I've used a tractor to farm 120 acre farm for over 23 years . And then we sold the farm . We now have 4 acres in a large development , And my neighbors keep me and my tractors busy . (My other tractor is a John Deere 950 Also a YANMAR built unit, GREAT TRACTOR)

One thing to keep in mind about the 790 is that it is the economy model. JD has priced this no-frills tractor to compete in the market on price. That means that the margin is a lot lower on this unit than on any of the 4x00 machines. Maybe that is why the dealer wants to push those /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif.
When I went into my dealer (Ontrac, Henrietta, NY) and explained that I wanted a basic machine that could do a number of things, he walked right out to the 790. Said the other ones were really nice, but if price is the defining factor, get a 790.

That attitude of his was the reason I bought the 790. I don't have anything like the skills to repair one of these, so I knew that a good feeling about my dealer was worth an awful lot to me. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I JUST WANT AND LOOKED AT A B7100. IT HAS 500HRS. ON IT IT IS ALSO A HST. WITH A LOADER.$8500.00 IT WAS REAL CLEAN TOO. BUT MY ? IS WILL IT HAVE ENOUGH POWER TO RUN A TILLER OR A 4FT. BOX SCAPER? IT WOULD BE NICE TO HEAR FROM YOU GUYS THAT HAVE ONE THANKS. PS.. HOW IS THE PRICE?

The B7100HST has enough HP to run a tiller & bush hog & pull 4'box scraper & 5" rake for there a little mule indeed,just its going to take a little longer at the task.
Did you notice that the B7100HST doesn't have power steering.

THANKS THOMAS I HAVE HEARD LOTS OF GOOD THINGS ABOUT THEM. BUT YES THEY DO NOT HAVE PW.ST. IT WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE BUT I DIDN'T THINK THAT IT WAS TOO HART TO STEER. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

What year was the B7100HST and was that a Kubota FEL.
500 hours isn't much if the tractor was taken care of for $8,500.oo.

Second hand Kubota w/FEL in good shape plus seems to bring a good price lately.

The owner is asking a fair price,and if you really like the tractor make an offer $7,950.oo and work from there.
